Removal and What To Look For When Checking Unknown LT95 2 Door Rangie

My '75 2 Door LT95 is on the way out (noisy in 3rd, jumps out of 2nd on the odd occasion), clutch at the end of its tether, needs replacing soon.

Have access to a replacement LT95 from a '79, however the condition is unknown and unable to be driven.
Yet to drop the oil, and look for the brass fines or chunks of metal.
Leaking from the rear output shaft over the handbrake shoes. No other visible leaks.
Case looks in good nick, 3559**** series.

    1. Would appreciate some pointers or tips on what can be checked when looking at a condition unknown LT95 for a 2 Door Range Rover, once removed. Other than oil condition, any suggested checks prior to removal?

    2. What is the most effective way of removal from the rusty, cactus, donor body? Removal with the engine, or remove transmission tunnel and separating, leaving the engine in place?

    3. Best method for replacement into the '75? Leave engine in place and remove the seats and transmission tunnel.

I'd like to change the Welsh Plugs (core plugs) at the rear of the engine and rear main oil seal as a preventative measure.
Anything else I should consider; engine, clutch, transmission wise? Have small engine crane.

Prefer to be off the road for minimal time. Job to be done before Xmas.
    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers,
    Richard

    Condition assessment??

Reviving an old but still relevant thread....

I have a lt95 in my stage 1 which is suspect in 2nd gear. I have a donor lt95 which is of completely unknown condition. If I do some basic breakdown inspection of the donor lt95, what should I be looking to gauge overall condition?

    Thanks

    Chris.
It could be worth trying a synthetic oil and shift enhancer addative before surgery.
My D2 manual was always sticky into second until I used a full synthetic auto trans plus a conditioner. Was a long time ago so I cant say which brand it was.
It did the job, even after a subsequent oil change to a mineral gearbox oil when serviced by a "specialist"
    Worth a try.

"Suspect" in 2nd gear, what do you mean, is it crunching or what? That usually means a strip down and reco (new bearings, synchros, seals & gaskets etc. But then you will probably find that there is a need for replacement gears, remember we are talking about a gearbox that is 30 odd years old, the replacement "unknown condition" one could be worse. The only way you can tell is to fit it and try it out or better still, dismantle it and check everything. Best to remove and reco the one that you know the condition of IMO. And don't forget that a stage 1 LT95 is different to a RR or County LT95.
