    D1 Snorkel

Looking at putting a snorkel on my 98 300tdi Disco. Due to financial restraints have looked and found some for less than $200 from O/S. Any one tried these cheaper ones? Any good? I wish to be able to install a 2nd battery one day, and do not have ABS.. so do I get the version that is for ABS models as these say they allow 2nd battery to be fitted?

    Thanks .

I have a cheapy D2 snorkel and am very happy considering it cost $128 on Ebay.
The template was a bit hard to understand but accurate.

The diecast adaptor which I understand from reading is a copy of an old ARB design , is fine.
The only thing that ARB claim is really inferior is UV protection, which remains to be seen. I guess I can paint the thing if I am worried about UV deterioration.
Oh and the top did not have the slots for water drainage running far enough up the top to drain water. It appears that the maker did not really understand what the slots were for, maybe thinking they were only for tightening the top onto the snorkel. 10 minutes with a hacksaw fixed it..
I cannot comment on the ABS vs non ABS.

I have recently installed a Safari Snorkel on my 98 300tdi ($125 from wreckers) I also have no ABS and as such you need a snorkel that is designed to be fitted to it. An ABS version (from Safari) is totally different to the Non ABS version. I can only conclude that it may be the same for all manufacturers. The non ABS version was very easy to fit.
    Good luck.

The cheaper snorkels are all generally Safari clones and either ABS or non-ABS allow for fitting a second battery.

The difference is that the ABS type uses an adaptor piece that enters the airbox on the side by the guard (need to move the airbox in towards engine) while the non-ABS has a different style of adaptor that crosses over behind the airbox and enters on the side by the engine. If you haven't got ABS either type will work.

    Cheers

abs - non abs snorkel on a D1

    Disckombi is spot on.
I have/had a non-abs version fitted until it went to the panel beaters for a new guard and snorkel due to someone backing into me.
They ordered an abs version as the non abs must have been hard to get. I was a bit peeved at first but they did a good job and the cars not worth the worry.
The abs version has a longer "side" on it (on the guard) as it enters closer to the front of the car, and goes into the side of the airbox closest to the guard.
The original "non-abs" version enters the guard further towards the back of the car, and it wraps around the back of the airbox and enters it from the engine side. I had to move my bottle jack from on top of the wheel arch.
Both will work if you don't have abs - you just move your airbox in a little bit to account for the entry point of the air pipe. - Matti
