Scorcher on 3.5 rr won't start!

    Yo, still scratching my head.
Finally got around to putting a timing light on my 3.5 flapper rr only to find that the mech advance was not working.
No worries, I'll pull the scorcher off the 90 and stick it on the rr.

I did get it running but way to retarded so pulled it out and rotated to get more space to advance....... No go!
Finally got poised off and put it back in the 90 and fire straight up.
Put the Lucas back in th rr and fired straight up! Put the Lucas in the 90 and fired straight up. Scorger back in the rr and nothing!!!

    What am I missing?????

Well the distributor advance probably hasn't had any oil under the rotor button for a while! You can either dismantle the advance, see this thread for clues, or take off the rotor button, add penetrating oil and work the advance back and forth to loosen it.

Pulled the Lucas dizzy apart and loosened it but the springs have stretched. Put it back together and works but not 100%. Strangely, the vacuum advance was working fine.

It's the rr not starting on the scorcher that's got me scratching my head. It was bought for my 90 running an edelbroke carb.......is there any difference running it on the flapper injection? It did run briefly until I pulled it out to redo timing.
I still feel it's timing but have checked at least 10 times.

Have magnecore blue leads and NGK 6ES plugs, same as I use on the 90.

Checked timing, it's at TDC but spark does seem a little weak.

One of the springs (the thicker one) on the Lucas dissy is supposed to be loose, it only limits advance at high rpm.

As for the Scorcher, I'd be looking at the way you are connecting the coil. If you are disconnecting the Lucas dissy loom you are probably disconnecting the wire that the ECU uses to sense engine rotation. It is white with a black stripe and goes to coil negative. Without it your ECU will not inject petrol.

And I'd try 5 degrees BTDC timing, it should run better.

Humble pie time! Lucas was 180 deg out. Fired straight up but now seem to have a fuel issue. Not sure that I would have put the scorcher in twice at 180 out but will leave that for another day.
Thanks Bee Utey, appreciate the response.

As a mechanic, best way to tell if on Top Dead Centre without taking off the rocker cover and checking valve location , is to remove no 1 spark plug, place a small piece of scrunched up newspaper over the hole for spark plug ( not small enough to fit inside!!) and slowly try to start with short cranks till it blows out (compression stroke), be sure to remove positive from ignition coil or unplug disy wires first!! Then line up timing marks. Then mark number one on distributor and ensure button points at that mark..... Guaranteed to be in correct location, correct ignition timing can then be achieved by timing light.

Much faster is to apply a length of heater hose to no.1 plug hole and blow in. A little each side of TDC should hold pressure when on the firing stroke, 1 turn out and you will blow either through the inlet or exhaust valve.

As for dissy timing, get a marker pen and MARK where your rotor button is pointing at no.1 TDC BEFORE you remove the dissy, fit the replacement dissy exactly the same way and line up the same cylinder's lead to that mark.
