Could be a blocked fuel filter,
When was it last changed?
My S3 is really having problems at the moment, i'm not mechanically minded in the slightest but i assume it's the carby. Driving along and lose all power, then within about 20 seconds, it backfires then keeps going, but is getting really bad at the moment.
Any suggestions??? Prices on replacements?? Please help... i've got the Petrol 2.6L Rover 6.![]()

Could be a distributor problem. I encountered the same problem several times on various Land Rovers and found that the wire that goes from the points assembly to earth on the distributor was broken or had a loose solder joint. As the distributor advances, the wire stretched and disrupts continuity, the car loses power as there is no ignition (spark). As the distributor plate returns to its normal posi (due to lack of vaccuum adavance from the now stalled engined), contact is re-established and the car starts again, causing it to backfire because there is unburnt fuel in all the cylinders.
I'm guessing 80% chance this is an electrical problem. Good news, because it's cheaper to fix.

8) outlaw, i've pm'd you,
i've had similar symptoms over the years,
the vanguard did it occasionally, ignition, when it died completely my mate would jump out pull the bonnet and shake the wiring loom down behind the radiator- that usually got it going
the cortina, hell, carby, and the number of times it wouldn't start, i carried two spare batteries in the boot to start it after getting fuel, had a lot of servo blokes retune it at the pumps for me, only to find that it would only start when i hooked up the boot batts.
the morrie [lowlight] minor, fuel pump - passenger stamp your feet
had same in a mini too, the fix was to run it up a gutter, and bounce back onto the road, 'cause the pump was in the boot, - it saved you stopping!
ah, life with old carby engines
love it.
Outlaw, I had a 11a once that did the same thing, went through all the usual troubleshooting (ie. cleaned carby, checked all ignition electrics) turned out to be a blocked fuel filter. Replaced it regularly never had a problem after that. I don't know if this is your problem but it might be worth a check.
Vic.
Hi Outlaw
I had one of those 2.6 Landys, when mine did that the simple fix was to unscrew the plastic cap on top of the carby and top up the oil level, sounds unlikely but it was all that needed doing.
When the problem started happening weekly I bought a carby kit and fitted it(all instructions were included).I never needed to top the oil up after that.
Good luck
Andrew

i had a coil problem that had me stuffed for over a year. the engine would run great in the daytime but at night, if there was any moisture around, it would miss like a bastard. after trying everything else, i tried the coil and bingo. turned out that the stupid thing was dying and not putting out enough spark, when the lights were on, it had an even harder time producing spark, add a little moisture (the natural enemy of pommie petrol cars) and it was history

Hi Outlaw
2.6 with the intermittent no goes, this only been happening since the hot weather? if so there is a possibility that the plastic cam on the points has melted as this was a frequent problem with lucas dist points in hot weather,if so check and reset the points gap, if not check the ign to coil lead, dizzie to coil return lead for good contacts, also the ign to fuel pump lead, fuel pump is mounted on the chassis under the drivers side seat box (that's the original pump position) make sure that the conections are good and clean as salt water affects the conections and they corrode , also the conections on the fuse box under the steering wheel as corrosion can get in there, failing that start looking at the fuel side of things ,iI.E. fuel filter , fuel pipe connetcions for leaks, if giving signs of starvation under load, fuel filter blocked or fuel filters in connections at fuel pump or carby banjos blocked also check oil level in dash pot(little plastic knob on carb use only thin oil --10grade ) that's all that Ican think of for now. Thanks for all the suggestions people, i've got her booked in for a service tomorrow but will have a look later today myself and if all else fails, will print this out and give it to the mechanic.
Thanks again
