    Engine conversion

Hey guys, I'm getting my 95 3.9 v8 auto discovery in about a year but I dont think I'll be able to afford fuel costs whilst still in school, what engine conversions are available that I could other than then regular TDI and td5? Also I want it to be fair bit of power because I want to put it on 35s in the future

Honestly what it would cost you in an engine conversion, you would never spend on fuel. Putting in a TD5 or a Puma engine will take a lot of work and engineering.

Hmm suppose, would it be worth just buying a TDI instead? Because the 3.9 is my dads and he said its mine when I get my license but fuel prices are only going to go up, plus I want to heavily modify it

a 300tdi would be easy but they're not exactly a powerhouse.
A td5 is loooooots of work.
Puma is probably looooooots more work
Either stick with the V8 and put up with the fuel prices or look at other options.
Could always put a cummins in it....

    LPG is your answer
If you go the more expensive gas injection you will have the same power as petrol and no backfires. You can also get 3 torpedo style tanks to go in the back wagon area floor, so you can keep the petrol tank as well for extra range. If I only needed a 5 seater this is what I'd do to a D1/2 V8.

I would have also looked at LPG. The Tdi is a dog of a motor.

If you can't afford the petrol you definitely can't afford an engine change. If you keep a lookout for an underfloor conversion kit you should be able to pick one up cheap. That way you can have around 70 lts of gas and as much petrol as you can fit in sill tanks etc. You also then have the fuel supply for a 5.7 alloy Chev conversion and injected gas, both of which will help pulling big tyres.

(That is after another few thousand disappears on super tough axles etc. )

There is no cummins that'll fit well into a disco. Especially not for your budget.

Can you even get insurance for driving the V8?

    Keeping V8 won't help much...

If you don't have a licence yet then you won't be allowed to drive the V8 when you do...
