unpick seat material to wash it?

the interior of my '92 tdi discovery is pretty tired and grubby, has anyone ever unpicked the seat fabric and put it in the washing machine to freshen it up?

"...ever unpicked the seat fabric and ..."

... owning a Land Rover is masochism enough...

Seriously, I've had a measure of success with the automotive spray-pak fabric shampoos.

The best was clothes washing powder, warm water and a scrubbing brush. But took the seat (foam) a few days to dry out aftewards...

You'll get really good results using a wet and dry vacuum /carpet cleaner eg Vax or hire one from Woolworths and using their detergent and anti foam solutions. Use the upholstery head.
Or take the car to a detailer. Be easiest option.

    X 2 - and surprisingly cheap too

(even if you can get them off easily the covers may fall apart in a washing machine)

A lot of seat fabrics - not all - also have a thin foam backing which is sewn in, you have to very careful when removing the covers as that stuff will just pull away. I have removed mine just to repair stuf like the lumbar supports etc - but definitely wouldn't wash them while removed. The fabric foams and a brush are definitely your best option for DIY.
