Thread: VMX80 - R380 gearbox

Can anyone confirm if VMX80 is an approved oil for the R380 gearbox in the Discovery II?.

For the last 180Kkm I have always used Penrite semi-synth oil, Trans Gear 75W-80, never had an issue. Just before I left Sydney I had a new to me garage replace all the driveline oils, they used VMX80 and within 1000km towing I have lost 5th gear, coincidence???.

Appreciate any thoughts.

According to its specs, it should be ok to use, but is it the best for the box????. Don't think it had anything to do with the 5th failure. It will be a worn bearing letting 5th cog go out of mesh and has more than likely stripped teeth.

that's what I thought, suspect it was just that time, impending spending or large sums of cash makes one question anything.
