Sounds like a damaged cancel switch to me.
Hi
I recently took my 1994 Defender 110 to the auto electrician to change the indicator/horn/high beam switch and when it came back the switch wouldn't stay on if indicating right and the steering wheel was off center. I supplied the switch as another mechanic had told me I would have to pay $400 for a switch from a dealer (switch is a Lucas). Is there a trick to this or have they stuffed up what should be a simple job? Did I supply the wrong part? I need some info before I go back and get them to actually fix it!
Cheers
Sounds like a damaged cancel switch to me.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

damn, surely they should have seen it? I'll tell them to look out for it. Thanks
I would get the steering wheel straight first to see if that makes a difference - mine is doing similar having changed the power steering box.

seems logical, perhaps a trip to an actual Land Rover mechanic might be in order. Thanks
Had a similar issue in the past where the plastic cover assembly was over tightened off centre, made turning on the lights nearly impossible.
Was the steering wheel straight before it went in?
The steering wheel was a bit off center but not as much as when it came back, I'm presuming they needed to take the steering wheel off to get the switch over the shaft. I'm wondering if I need to take Little John (the Defender) to my Land Rover mechanic even for simple things like indicator switches.
I had my steering wheel off and installed a new indicator cancelling ring today which means I also did some reading on how to install it. There were lots of people reporting similar symptoms on forums and the answer was a simple realignment of the indicator cancellation ring with the steering wheel off. I'd certainly start by checking that before ordering a new switch!
Bassman, if you pull the steering wheel it is be obvious how it works. There is a plastic collar that goes around the column that locks into the base of the steering wheel. If it isn't locked in properly, or is broken it won't work.
You should be able to have a gander without removing the wheel by removing the lower section of the plastic steering column surround. IIRC there is a single screw that loosens off the indicator stalk and allows for adjustment. Don't over tighten it when you are done - it will break and then you have to start again with a new one (trust me I know).
If you do have to remove the steering wheel, get one of these:

^ You can try without a puller first. I've taken my steering wheel off twice now and haven't needed a puller at all...
