To remove steering wheel, loosen nut until there's a wee gap twixt nut and wheel.With non dominant arm lifting from behind wheel, strike nut with nylon hammer with dominant (the clever one) hand. the wheel will pop up towards you, but be held by the nut. If you don't leave the nut on, you'll get the wheel in your face.
