The first post is always the most challenging, but it’s easy sailing from here.
Folks, hwyoung has a semi off road camper trailer ( or it might be a caravan ) and he wants to know if the D4 tow ball will be high enough?
Hi Hwyoung,
If your van has a std height suspension you may actually find the std ball height on the D4 is too high. If your van has an offroad suspension height, it will possibly be ok as it is.
It doesn't really matter. There are numerous height towing lugs available from Hayman Reese agents. They will slide into the Landrover receiver. The lugs have different ratings, and you will have to make sure the lug you choose is ok for your caravan weight. The higher capacity lugs are generally solid bar, whereas the lower ones are made out of tubing. In Australia, the lugs can be used upside down without impacting on their rated capacity. All you need to do is work out how much of a change is required.
Hope this is not too basic for you.
The D4 will stay at the normal height even when you put a tow weight on the ball. This makes it a little easier to work out the correct height. Get the caravan on level ground, and using a spirit level ( on the front A frame is good ) , use the jockey wheel to level the van. Then measure from the ground to the bottom of the ball coupling. Still on level ground, and with the D4 in normal height, measure from the ground to the start of the curve on the towball. The difference is the offset on the towing lug required.( or you can simply back the D4 up to just touch the caravan coupling, and measure the difference. ( make sure the caravan is level )
Any dramas, just post your query, and someone will try to assist.

M8, I tow a 24ft offroad van with my Disco4 TDV6, which replaced my Disco3 TDV6. I use a Mitchell Bros after market Tow Hitch (available on the net or through 4wd accessory outlets) on both the vehicles. I found the genuine tow hitch nicnamed 'THE PLOUGH' to be too low and awkward to be muck'n around with. They bottom out on deep driveways/ruts etc. With the Mitchell Hitch you can purchase the adjustable height tongues available and assuming your Disco is air suspension the vehicle will adjust to to the required towing height automatically. Another bonus is no need for sway/weight dist. bars. Happy touring in a GR8 tow vehicle.
hi...thanks for the response to my first shortened post.....I am new to this forum game and am still working out how to use it correctly..... more questions to follow...Cheers hwyoung
