There are a few truck diesel engines with hydraulically operated valves and variable timing. The 6.0 litre V8 used in F trucks and the 4.5 litre V6 derivative from Navistar for example.
Edit both those examples use compound turbos BTW.
I have one of the compound turbos (from the 4.5 Litre Navistar) for my 4BD1T pic below when I was making a manifold.
