Thread: Temp Issue with D2 TD5 2001

You would probably be better off posting this in the d2 section, as there's a lot of knowledge there.

I really only know the v8's, but it sounds guage related to me.

The temp gauge in a D2 TD5 is controlled by the ECU so is not a direct measure of the signal sent by the sensor.

This means that the gauge stays at half if the engine is running within the correct temperature range say from 75C to 100C. Mine only gets to say 93-94 C and I hear the viscous fan start to roar and the temp drops, towing "only" about 700Kgs on a +30day up a mountain.

If I were you I would take it to a specialist to check correct operation of the viscous fan and whether the radiator is clean inside.

This would be a fraction of the cost of replacing a head gasket failure from overheating.

You want to get it checked out for sure. From memory the gauge doesn't move from half way (normal position) until engine temp exceeds approx 115c.

Don't keep driving for long if the gauge rises.
The gauge is controlled by the engine computer and when it lifts to 3/4 your outside the preferred heat range.
The alloy heads on the TD5's don't like being over hot for to long.

Does the Disco get hot when you don't have the float on?
If doesn't then I'd suggest it may be a faulty viscous coupling.
This coupling allows the cooling fan to engage when needed.
To check....
Have a feel how tight the fan blades are to move before starting the motor when the engine is cold.
When the motor is first started cold it should roar slightly(engaged).
Not long after this you should hear the roar stop.
Looking at the fan it should be turning very slow.
Turn the motor off and try too move the fan, it should be looser now.
Go for a drive and when it starts to get hotter than it used too have listen for the fan roar.
Turn the motor off and feel the fan again(don't burn your self on the radiator).
It should be tight to turn, if not I'd be changing it.

Mine was fine when used on normal driving.
When loaded off road it was getting hot like yours as the motor is working harder.
One fan assembly and all is good.

Thanks Alien and others. No temp does not move when not towing, so it may be that viscous coupling. I got a mate that is pretty handy and will get him to do what you say Alien.

If your mate is pretty handy here is how I check the viscous hub.
Get a heavy duty rag,ie old towel,old jeans etc.Get a good purchase of the rag and gently touch the fan at idle speed whilst cold,there should be some resistance but the fan should stall.If there is no resistance at all,ie the fan seems not to be driven at all suspect its stuffed.Now get the engine hot and repeat,it should have more resistance (ie trying to drive) than when its cold.If it still frewheels hot its stuffed.Roverlord on here is a parts supplier and looks after members with reasonable prices.

As others say,that temp gauge only moves when the engine is very hot.I would be very careful proceeding with it reading at the 3/4 mark.Next move of the gauge is either back to center(normal) or full hot and warning light on.It doesnt work like a normal temp gauge.

It is the viscous coupling. I have been quoted $375 for it, plus 300 labour to fit. It will have t wait a couple of months, just paid the reg and insurance, all the bills come in about now lol
