Assuming he's still there... Fred Smith in Bayswater (but it has been a few years since I've used him).
Failing that, have a look in the 'Recommended Suppliers' section, for one close to you.

Well it finally happened and driving in the 44c heat last Friday blew my top rad hose and killed the head gasket, hopefully will get away without a new head. Engine is running fine with no coolant in oil or vice versa but cooling system is pressurizing.
Happened 500m from home going up a short incline so i was lucking in that respect. Can anyone recommend somewhere experienced in TDI cylinder heads in Melb metro ?

Excuse my lack of knowledge but what do you mean by pressuring? my disco blew the coolant hose on 45 deg day here in wa. But i thought i got away with it as no water in oil or vice versa that i can see???

Coolant hoses are under pressure from the combustion gases entering the coolant passages, if your hoses are all rock hard even after removing air locks and thermostat is open then gasket is gone.
Look to see if you are getting bubbles in your coolant bottle, i thought i was lucky same as you - still to confirm 100% though.
Camel Landy, i know Fred but i will do the spanner work and get a head place to check the head for me.

Thanks . No sign yet. No loss of coolant either. Hopefully lucky

You could try ringing a LR garage north/east of city and ask if they do it... If they do, bingo. If they don't, ask where they send the head for testing. If they don't do the work themselves, maybe they wouldn't mind sharing?
I think they are called Auger Engines in Bayswater. They build race engines and do testing machining. Got Tdi head checked 2 years ago for about $130. Scoresby rd maybe??Cheers

Since its been so hot lately i'm only just getting around to looking at the disco, reversed down my driveway to the side of the house so i can work on it.
Now my for my dilemma, when i replaced the blown top hose and topped the car was slightly nose down which made bleeding the cooling the system difficult.
Its now nose uphill and after letting it idle for a while and feeling a little bubbling in the expansion tank, i'm not sure that the gaskets gone at all ?
Would air trapped in the system cause occasional bubbling , hoses are back to how they should be and not under pressure - do i risk driving it around the block to test it ?

FWIW when my HG went, I was middle of no where and still drove at up to 60km/h on flat ground (cool ambient temp) for about an hour. The word "leaking" comes to mind more than "blown".
IMO depends how much it's leaking. You might need revs up or load on the engine to get visible bubbles appearing in the expansion tank. I struggled to get bubbles to appear by rev'ing the engine at stand still. I needed load on the engine to leak enough air to lock up the cooling system.
