The noise could simply be coming from your serpentine belt. It could be from the idler, tensioner ect.

My TD5 Disco has become noise when it's cold. Not when it's idling, only when I accelerate above 1200 - 1500rpm. It's a very definate change in engine pitch and noisy. It goes away within 1 - 2 minutes but I find it concerning.
Any ideas?
I know some people like to warm up their motors before driving them but I'd like to leave that discussion for another thread. I want to get to the bottom of what this noise could be. Just for anyone that wants to know though. I was always tought to just wait a few seconds until the oil is up around the motor and then drive off slowly. Dont flog or give it too much until it's completly warm but idling a cold motor can be worse than driving them becasue the parts haven't expanded to operating temp they and all bouncing around being small parts in big holes. Driving it keeps the parts under load and stops them bouncing around. Driving it also causes it to warm up quicker again reducing the cold running time.
I just need help with the noise in this thread. I might put my GoPro on the bonnet and record the noise tomorrow.
Happy Days.

the timing chain tensioner is a possibility
cheers Ian
Is it a roaring noise or grinding metalic type noise??
A roaring noise will be the viscous fan, D3/4/RRS do this also at start up, not as loud as the TD5 though, outside temp can cause it, oil in the harness can cause it also.
A grinding metalic type noise will be the above mentioned by the others.
Baz.

Thanks was just intrigued how an electrical issue would cause the Viscous fan to run as its physically dependent upon the spring on the front to be heated up.
Umm no
Thermo fan yes
