    Toymota diesel probs

Been reading a bit lately about issues with 'sludging' in the Tojo 2d4d or what ever its called motor in Prado's and Hiluxes. Apparently the cause is leaking injector seals allowing fuel to mix with the sump oil and thus causing sludge to gather around the oil pick up. The results have been catastrophic for some.
Apparently the replacement of the injector seals is a service item every 40,000km! I have no idea what they charge for this but knowing Toyota, it won't be cheap.
Is this the only engine where these seals are a service item?
Just curious since I've read about this problem in several places.

We met a Prado driver on the Gove Road last year, with a mains / big end knock. The driver did indicate his oil light was coming on intermittently for a while but then would go off again. He was about 300kms from nowhere. We offered him assistance but he seemed to think he would make to back to Katherine.

The Toyota D4D engine has been plagued with injector issues right from the word go. Replacement runs to around $4000. They are now up to generation 5 of injector type with no guarantees that they have it right.

I did read about injector seal replacement being due every 40 000km, but I was under the impression that this was a new update to the service schedule which doesn't appear in most vehicle service books.
The cynic in me would suggest it is to give Toyota an "out" when it comes to warranty repair. I would say that injector washers needing replacement that often would fall under "not fit for purpose" if it came to a court case.

    A workmare purchased a hilux 160 000Km +.

blue smoke on startup. Newcastle diesel service replaced seals and service for $500.

Toyota dealers locally claim there no issue. They told us the problem is that need to use 5W-30 synthetic oil.

we have a cruiser V8 that we are testing this theory with, Its been using lots of oil and clogging filters within a few thousand Km. In this vehicle the oil pressure gauge reads higher as the filter collapses.
The operator note to us was that the oil light stays on for 10Km in the morning.

Why would this cause sludge ? my impression it would just thin the oil, so where does the sludge come from.

Ask any Toyota owner they will tell you there is no problem.

I would imagine you're right but Paul Gover (he's the editor I think) who writes for the Herald Sun in Melb seemed to be very confident that this was the problem as late as last weeks Cars Guide.
Ask a Toyota owner anything and there's no problem LOL- Toyota brainwashing re reliability

Cylinder combustion gases enter the engine oil system causing sludge. I hear!

Yep and the added fuel dilutes the oil which causes oil pressure to drop, but , I would have thought the sludge would be less. I would think the thinning oil would do more damage than a sludge of some sort.

It doesn't really matter whats causing it, Toyota owners wont admit theres a problem.

If you're lucky you'll be looked after like Toyota has with the one here.

They very graciously give us a new engine every 30-40k
