    Maxi Drive

Hey guys.... New to the forum and new to Land Rovers. (Previous Ford owner).
Anyways, I just bought a 1992 LR Discovery equipped with Maxi Drive. I have noticed that the truck won't move unless the maxi drive is engaged. Is this normal? There is a light that comes on that says "front" maxi drive, so I thought that it had only to do with the front wheels, therefor the rear wheels should still work regardless of maxi drive being engaged. Any advice would help heaps!

No that is not normal and I am trying to think of why it would do that/

AH here is the thought. You have a broken axle or CV joint in the front and have not locked the centre diff lock.
Try locking the centre diff lock and see if it moves and if it does be prepared to dismantle the front axle.

Could also be a worn out front drive flange. Easiest to check if you don't have alloy wheels.. pop off the plastic axle cover and make sure the centre diff-lock (small lever) or maxi-drive isn't engaged. Attempt to drive off and have someone see if they can see the axle turning in the flange. If it does, new flanges are not expensive and are quick and easy to replace.

Hmmm but wouldn't it have something to do with the rear wheels or rear dif? I thought that under normal road driving, it used RWD...... I may be wrong... (Happens a lot)

Your disco will be full time 4wd with an open diff in the transfer case acting as a centre diff, giving drive to the front or rear as it needs it. Sounds like you have an issue up the front where something isn't engaging at one wheel.
The maxi drive button is a front locker.

Locking the centre diff means that drive goes to the front and rear in equal amounts. The front drive isn't being used because of the problem up that end.

Hmmm it does make a clunking noise from the front right wheel as I steer left..... Figured it was cv joint..... Bit would that cause it not to move at all unless maxi drive or dif lock is engaged?

Yes. If the CV joint is broken, you won't move anywhere without locking the center or front diff.

Stop driving it now and fix it. The CV joint can jamb your steering and kill you.
