    fuel pump defender 99

gooday. im hoping someone will disagree with me and thus save me many dollars.
bought a 99 defender 110 a month back. 230000 ks. noticed yesterday a very small diesel leak coming from fuel filter water sensor. figure ill do the right thing and replace the fueol filter not knowing when it was last done.

repco had one in stock so went about changing filter. old one was extremely tight to get off. either over tightened or been there a long time. eventually got it off.

read about purging procedure and followed instructions. ignition on for 30 seconds then off for 5, repeat half a dozen times, I could still hear the fuel pump whiring away at noticibly higher volume than before I started the job.
thought ide start her up and away she went. didn't miss a beat. couldn't hear the pump over the general noise .. turned off then ignition back on and now I have a high volume whiring sound that lasts around 30 seconds before tapering off . still audible if you lay under the car but it may have been like that before hand. tried the purge procedure 10 times over. took the car for a run and runs perfect. pulls hard up to 110 ks. just like before. come back, turn engine off. wait a minute, switch ignition back on and the high volume whiring is still there.

question time for those far more educated in these matters than I.

introducing air to the pump, has this now produced a imminent failure to be ? or is there air still trapped in the pump and after a few drives will it quieten down.?

as a last question, how hard to replace the pump. ill google it anyway but maybe someone here will advise me to sell the car and buy a Toyota ?? joking. about to cjeck prices on a pump. if I don't return here you will know I had a heart attack.

thank you in advance for any advise.

    regards

I`ll jump in here, seems as everyone must be at a BBQ.
Well done with the filter change. I only have a Puma, but what you have is a lift/pressure pump in the tank. When you shut down and then switch on the pump spins up until it reaches enough pressure and then only spins enough to flow fuel through filter, fuel pump system and back to tank.
When the other members finish BBQ`S they will have a better answer. :-)
    So just wait a bit.

I suspect that we are talking about a TD5.

Pump will be over a hundred through to about $700 o r $800 depending on if you get one from LR or a replacement from some aftermarket manufacturer.

I think on Defenders you have to drop the tank, on discoveries there is an access panel under the carpet in the luggage compartment.

I don't know if the sound you are getting is enough to warrant a change but the carrying of a spare might be necessary.

thankyou for the reply. forgot it was sat night bbq time.

from what you describe, that's how mine used to be. quiet hum until pressure was reached then almost silent. its only since I replaced the filter that the noise has increased 10 fold, its like it has air inside the pump and is struggling to purge itself. what I have done, is read through a few posts In here and it would seem my pump may be on its way out. so much for preventative maintenance re replacing the filter.
ive also discovered most on this forum would recommend vdo original equipment to replace the old pump. my heart attack approaches.. around 750 for a new unit. the mrs will kill me if the heart attack doesn't.

im hoping that by morning it will all have miraculously fixed itself.

thanks for the replies, maybe someone will have some good news re an alternative replacement or purging procedure before my divorce comes through.]

    cheers.

Before you buy a new pump...drop the tank, take the pump out and inspect the fine gauze filter on the pumps intake. They are inclined to pack closed with gunk and hinder the flow of fuel..... I wonder how many pumps are replaced unnecessary because of this.

    Best of luck.

I came across a thread in here late last night that mentioned the filter gauze. that will be my first plan of attack today. nothing to lose except time and perhaps a few swear words along the way.
    thankyou for the advise.

My td5 pump has had a whine for years!

Was meant to replace it before I left for our trip around oz but ran out of time. I am carrying a spare though.

I'm unsure if this is unusual but each time I replace the fuel filter the pump will be extremely loud for the first day or so (kind of sounds like there is air in there) and then quieten back down to its normal sound (which for me is a high pitched buzz)

Haha this info probably isn't much help as my pump is buggered (or at least noisy)
Hopefully someone with normally functioning pump will chime in.

I would however highly recommend cutting an inspection hole for the pump in the floor of the defender.
Makes getting to the bastard 1000 times easier then dropping the tank

ok. its sunday, the sun is shining and I should be out enjoying this new landy in the bush. instead ive spent the morning cutting through the floor to get the fuel pump out and inspect it for gunk... good news, gunk found in fine gauze. cleans to within an inch of its life, putback in car, noise is exactly as it was. not one iota quieter. and to top that off, now my fuel gauge isn't working, ive taken the pump out 4 times now to check wires on the sender unit havnt come adrift or sender float and arm hadn't dislodged. ive even removed the fuel filter again to see of anything may have stemmed the flow of fuel when I initially primes the system. all clean.

so now I eat lunch pondering my attempt to be preventative and change the.filter in the first place. the pump was fine before this. so was my fuel gauge.. now it looks like 800 for a new pump. hope the gauge works again, and tell the mrs for the 15th time that's its ok to cut a hole in the floor of a 20000 dollar car because that's the way its done. grrr

    Hi mate,

I'm sorry to say this but, it sounds just like mine! When I change the filter it whines it tits off for a couple of days and then just goes quite. Been that way for over six years. I change the filter at least once a year and always the same. I have a spare pump because I'd read that they can fail with no warning but it's just keeps going. I've spoken to a couple of specialist repairers and they say that it's normal.
So, I think you wasted your Sunday. Sorry mate. I'm 99.9% sure it's fine.

    Cheers,

    Nino.

    gooday nino.

you may be right. after a good lunch I got back to it and found one of the solder blobs on the sender unit had come adrift, touch with the solder gun and one final clean of the pump and every crevice I could find, and re install one more time. success with the fuel gauge now working. still had the whine so figured ide close up the hole, replace my matting and drawers and buy a spare to replace this one when it fails. I reckon I could replace it in 11 minutes now I have the hole cut. mrs still thinks it crazy but sometimes theres no explaining cars to em.

went for a drive early evening for about 30 ks. running fine and when I got home the noise with engine off but ignition on has perhaps halved. the pump still sounds to be running and there seems to be a flushing sound coming from the drivers side of the engine cover that stops when I turn the ignition off and returns when ignition on and pump running. buggered if I know but you may be right. a few drives and things might all settle down. I may wait for a new pump before venturing far though.

thankyou all for the helpful hints and sorry for what appears to be the 11 millionth question re fuel pumps. seems im not alone.

    cheers cactus
