Take the sump, spark plugs and rocker covers off. Drain the coolant. Pressurise the cooling system with compressed air up to the rad cap setting. Listen with a stethoscope hose for whistles.
some of you may recall my earlier posts about an engine I have bought and fitted that turned out to have pieces of metal through it http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-...what-do-2.html
and when I first got it started it was filling the sump with water, I strippped the motor (again for the 4th time) this time taking heads off and found the passenger side head wasn't bolted down properly (not to torque settings) so I assumed that was where water was coming from. after putting it all back together the motor is still filling the sump with water and I am out of ideas, I really need another engine or if someone has an idea where this water may be coming from and I desperately need my rig on the road it has now been 3 months that it has been off the road, and a big shout out THAKYOU to the ***** that sold me this thing you have completely screwed me over, you know who you are. Please help I am at the end of my tether and really lost to what to do next it has cost me a mint in gaskets tearing this thing down and putting it back together so many times, I just don't know what to do now. Getting to work has been a nightmare, boss has the ****s with me being late, mrs has ****s cause my rig is sitting in garage and she has to get up early to drive me it is all going wrong atm

thankyou bud I will try that, awesome idea btw
sump and rocker covers off and i have filled the system with water and pressurised the system with air, and absolutely no leaks, no pressure loss and no water coming out of the engine no whistling no nothing seems perfect seriously doing my head in over this
Might need to be at running temp. If you have a crack some where it will open when it heats up and close when it`s cold. Those kind of leaks will do your head in trying to locate them.
Cheers Hall
yeh mick i hear ya I have been looking for another one but have to hear it running and have to give it a compression test at the least this time, bought this one out of the vehicle. i did both with water and without i did the water and quickly pulled it down. to see if i could see anything inside, did find where (check link it is from a earlier post about this motor ) http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment...o-img_3063.jpg comes from.
and bee utey it wasn't from the the tip of the pushrod good call bud, but no cigar it was from the back of the cam chain cover where a bolt that holds the water pump was too long pushed the little lump off so I am gathering that is where water "may" be coming from
edited better pic shows where it came from
Have just had the timing cover off my 3.5 v8, had the exact same thing, a small frag of metal, identical to yours, from the same exact location, water pump bolt too long, pushed the metal in there, luckily it didn't make it into the engine and cause some more serious damage. I can't say I've got any coolant or temperature issues, no water in my oil either. I might be lucky though, there was a bit of excess gasket goop in the area that may have prevented water ingress. Preferably I'd like to have the hole welded up some by a professional aluminium welder, but it's not causing any problems since reassembling.
