It's not the fuel filter is it? My brother in law's disco burnt to the ground due to fuel filt problem (when being test driven by LR mechanic, post service thankfully)
Gday All,
I have read a few comments in threads that the incorrect fitting of the oil filter can be the cause of some engine failures.
As I service my car myself, I am unsure how this can be done. The filter has a fitting on the base of the filter that locates into the base of the housing, from what I can see if the 2 dont match correctly the filter ends up being to long to install.
My question is, is this some sort of myth generated so blame cant be pointed at L/R or is it possible to stuff up fitting this filter.
I never really take any notice when fitting the oil filter, as long as the filter goes all the way home into the housing it should be correct.
Cheers Ean

In LR documentation for assessing the possible causes of a failed engine, one of the tasks is to check that the oil filter is correctly fitted. Therefore I assume it is possible, perhaps by squashing the filter to get the cover to clamp when the filter is incorrectly located.

The oil filter can go in the wrong spot and the outer housing can go on with no issue. I have done it.
The actual cartridge needs to wiggled around until its male bit goes down the hole. If it doesn't the outer cover can still go on and be screwed down. As the actual filter is in the wrong spot it can cause a restriction that may cause lack of oil flow around the engine.
Again - a stupid design that makes things harder than it needs to be - when designing the engine why not make it so a suitable screw in cartridge could be used.
There is a lot of innovative design in our landies but there is also stupid design where things are more complex than they need to be.

Perhaps LR have changed a casting so that later models cannot be misfitted as my 3.0's filter seemed to fit only 1 way.

Gday All,
OK so I decide that whilst changing my oil and filter today I would have a closer look and see if I could see if its possible to fit incorrectly.
So this is the filter housing, im coming in from passenger side so its not front on but the hole in the round plastic ring is what the filter fits into, its at about 7 oclock if the windscreen was 12 oclock.
Ok so here is the nipple on the bottom of the filter that fits into the hole on the ring.all easy if you fit the filter first then put the housing or cap on and screw closed.
I did try and do it in the reverse, and wether it was luck or not i did manage to get the nipple to locate itself, but I wouldnt take the gamble.
I spoke to Justin C and he tells me he has seen filters come out with the plastic nipple broken from incorrect fitting.
So there you have it, it can be installed incorrectly.
Cheers Ean
