in regards to the ram effect of a snorkle, the standard carbie and most efi will gain little as the carbie will be leaner, more air same fuel content .. efi standard, may be better demending on how the ecu calculates the extra air .. etc ... my haltech measures the air pressure MAP 3 sensor and thee temperature and calculates the right amound of fuel / air ratio evey half second so the mix is as you program it .. then you can program for better economy and performance and with a laptop on the passanger seat you can see what all the sensors are reading and adjust the fuel maps for how you want the engine to perform....
my 2 cents

The maths at first appear simple, and are, working out piston speed feet per second at RPM convert that to KPH..... .
But the deeper you look into it the more complicated the equations become (beyond my maths ability) partially where drag on inlet walls, diminishing air speed , turbelance on bends , (of which there are over a dozen from the snorkel inlet to the combustion chamber) restriction of air filter , turbo and inter cooler , manifold pulses +and - , temperature and barometric pressure and on it goes.. :?
Generally gains in the order of 0.1psi manifold pressure can be achieved but requires considerable induction design work very large air boxes and high vehicle velocities certainly outside of what can be achieved with a normal road going 4WD and in particular a Discovery TDI.
Some articles of interest on the subject, some articles are a bit lengthy.

relax landrovermick. No-one has to get the $hit$ just because someone has a diametrically opposed opinion. Science or non-science, they are all just personal observations. It would be pretty crook it if people couldn't express a view on this forum because it contrary to someone else. I say let people make up their own minds.
More importantly, has anyone else had any positive observations with cyclone type air pre-cleaners. By the way my view is that snorkels are good for both diesel and petrol engines. At the very least they make the air filter last longer, even in the city. (I'de like some scientific observations about the particle content of air at 1 metre vs 1.8 m).
I will be making a snorkel sooner or later and need to decide how to cap it. Also, I am considering taking the easy option and making a short snorkel to just poke throught the top of the guard of the isuzu 110. I've seen a few of these about. Any observations on these would be good.

I had the bits and pieces installed on wednesday, everything was good, or so it seems.
I noticed there was not that much air flow in the snorkel so being curious i put a plastic bag over the intake, bumped up the revs and the bag would not stick, so i undid the join that goes to the guard and had a look through, the moron installer in his infinate wisdom did not connect the snorkel to the intake, then to infuriate me even further the company does not open on a saturday so i could not go and abuse f*#k out of them straight away.
So considering they are an ARB dealership I decided to call the head office and make it their problem, I have been asured everything will be fixed on monday
We will see

Clowns
What a bunch of clowns,
Let everyone know who they are so we dont use them! Make sure they knock some dollars off the price or something!!
You will have to change your avatar now to include your snorkel!
Cheers Gaz.

ARB - I bet if it was a TOYOJAM or a NISSANSAM they would have sealed it up properly. Can ya imajine it if ya didnt look at it and drowned in a river - they toyosam owners would have said more bad things about the Best 4x4 downunder.

Read through all the links, all read like a thesis for a grad student. Two final things before I sign off on this one, like I said to begin with it's one of those which side of the fence. Do you believe or don't you ? Bit like religion.... actually shouldn't go there huh ? Still the same principle.
But if these academics (and if they aren't they should be) have worked out there is no ram air effect under mach 1 in a plane and none on a snow ski, then they obviously believe that all engines exactly the same (which they aren't) and proves that nothing they say has any relevance to the real world. Going by their calculations a V8 consuming 500cfm to get an "air ram" effect through a snorkel needs a 1in inlet leading into a 3in before the carbie. No wonder these people shelter in Universities, there is no way 1inch pipe would flow enough air regardless of how much pressure it had even if the car could manage a mild mach 1.
Actually there's one more thing, That's a real lot of bad luck on the snorkel fitting DiscoTdi, hope some good comes from it.

That's a bit crook considering thst you pay for a 'professional' job.
This is one reason why I do all my own instalation/modification and service work. I have had enough of guessing games by these 'so called' mechanics who know jack about LR or RR's and getting burnt in the process.
Our local ARB (Southside, QLD) have been really good after speaking to soem of the blokes in my club. There has been no complaints, good cunstomer service (rare in QLD!!!) and all work has been done as it should with no stuff uips!!
Hope you have your problem fixed soon.
