    Exhaust Q for Isuzu 110

A question for anyone who knows about the 110's fitted with a 4BD1 3.9lt diesel Isuzu. :?

Is it there any significant power/torque advantages in an after market larger exhaust fitted to a stock standard 4BD1 exhaust manifold?

Is it worth while losing the 4BD1 manifold and getting extractors fitted with a larger exhaust.

Or is it best to stick with the standard landrover fitted exhaust? Does anyone know the diameter pipe for the standard factory exhaust?

    thanks

The standard exhaust is 57mm so around 2" on the old scale. As for extractors, they will only have any benifit if you doing alot of high revs driving, and considering the Isuzu has a 3200rpm limit it's really a much of a muchness. Put it this way, standard manifold retains good low down torque, extractor will sacrifice a little torque but will give you a little top end.
If you go the extractor option send me a PM and let me know how they go, as I'm putting an Isuzu into mine and would be very interested in the outcome. An if you do the extractors, an arn't impressed give me a bell, an I'll let you know of some tricks to do to them when they have upgraded exhausts.

thanks for the feedback. I've since discovered it is a 2 1/4inch exhaust. I took the safe option and ordered the standard military exhaust yesterday. Someone told me you can get get extra performance from a diesel just by trimming the intake and exhaust gasket to increase free flow of gas. Has anyone been down this track OR know any other inexpensive tricks?

At one stage I was thinking turbo, but too hard and way too much money.

    thanks again

I've got the standard Isuzu in my County - its a gem. Turbo needn't be expensive, but the best way to do it is replace the entire engine with the turbo version, that way you get the spin on oil filter, 80 amp alternator and proper head-studs. Around $5000 for the 4BD1-T engine, but you can get about $3500 for your non-turbo 4BD1 if its in good nick.

As for cheap tune up tricks for the Isuzu, you should speak with a diesel specialist, they have heaps of litle tricks. Good servicing schedules and quality oil, fuel and air filters make a world of difference. I've kept detailed records of fuel usage since I've had the car (over 100,000 km), and each time I change the oil and filter (5000 - 8000 km) the economy goes up, same with the air filter. Once thats taken care of you can look at sorting out the injectors - plenty of folks around can give you advice on that, but hand lapping and shimming is the usual go - it makes a real difference to power and economy.

I've heard a snorkel can make a massive difference, but I've not tried it.

    Good Luck

thanks Kels. The car is not on the road yet. But I'll keep your advice in mind about oil changes and filters for when it's going again. What kind of air filter are you running, paper or foam oil?

    Exhaust

    Hi Guys,
As on any diesel put on a bigger diameter exhaust system helps. Any diesel around 4.0L should have around a 3 inch exhaust. A decent air intake helps too. If turbo diesel you want minuim back pressure. Dont get petrol engines confused with diesel in regard to exhaust scavenging etc. Check out an exhaust on a cummins/caterpillar and they are kept short and reasonable in size of diameter. Whack on big exhaust, decent sized air intake and get the maximuim efficiency you can. Get decent mufflers to. Truck ones are better if they fit. Good luck

rar110 - I'm using the standard Isuzu paper filter, its an excellent piece of kit. The filter itself is massive by todays standard, and does a great job. I'm sure you could get a more free flowing set up from Finer Filter or whomever, but for the price its hard to beat the one thats already there!
