    Rebuilding the TDV6 Advice

    Hi Folks,

I'm a happy TD5 owner of many years however I spotted on ebay a 2006 D3 with what appears to be engine failure hence a no reserve auction. I see from research engine failure can be just timing failure or big end and a few other nasties spoken about however I'm fairly competent at rebuilding engines so I don't see the TDV6 being two special. Having said this, I guess I was just looking for advice on general costs as my time is free and have a shed full of tools and hoist at home (hobby that is). Unfortunately the seller has no pictures nor klms so I guess its a wait and see on body condition as well but the seller is a well known land rover repairer so that part is good given I suspect they will work out their price to repair as well.

Sorry for the long winded story, just looking for a general idea on parts availability and cost for a rebuild.

Any advice appreciated here and assume I'm very comfortable with electronics and TD5 engine etc.

    Regards Geoff

providing the injection system is fine shouldent be too bad might even be able to pick up a cheap s/h engine and swap over

When these engines die it is usually a broken crankshaft and I don't believe these are available. It is only recently that bearings have been made available but little else.

If the engine needs replacing you would be better off sourcing a used engine.

Hi thanks for this and I just found out its got 190K on it so might have a rethink as I've seen a few threads on the bottom end so always assume the worst and used is perhaps the option here.

if it has broken any major internal component ie crankshaft etc then best off sourcing another used engine. these tdv6 engines are cast from a lightweight, strong, but brittle material, the force exerted during a major failure could compromise the block.

Perhaps just be careful with this car folks as cannot get a straight answer. I have an e-mail from the seller stating 190K and just now its now being sold at 259K on the ODO. Also being advertised as an SE but and SE with 5 seats (didn't know they made 5 seater is SE so assume its an S) But then again its ebay and one can say anything. Anyhow thanks for the advice at least by searching around I can see the issues with the motor generally and is only a matter of time when rebuild parts become more available. I'll keep looking for now and maybe a younger one. Naturally would love the 3.0l but the prices are still very high. Cheers

If the car is the one, I suspect it belonged to Gedsar in this thread. If it is then the ad is a little misleading as they know exactly what the issue is.

I believe the car was sold to them for $5k and now he is flipping it for a tidy profit.

It could be a fairly cheap repair depending on how much damage has occurred to the valve train or it probably needs a new motor.

That's the one, and I'm over it as will look for something around the 80Klms and and up a tad. Again, I learn't more in the past couple of days on this forum to work out that the next one will be one of these as the secondhand market comes down. Especially when I do a timing belt change to do an upgrade part/s as well.
