I would do it, a 4.4 isnt going to be any less a problem than a 2nd hand 4/4.6 with possible liner issues or an old 3.5.
You dont need to drill the block just use rover heads and P76 pushrods and the rocker gear will still get lubed correctly.
Cheers gents

is the p76 engine on offer out of a p76 or has it already been modded for a land rover product[as in been pulled from a rangie]. I had one in a 89 vogue with fuel injection and it was great in front of a zf4hp22
Plenty of P76 motors ended up in classic Range Rovers (and some Rover sedans and Triumph/MG sports cars and Stags too) before the 4.6 blocks became affordable. It was a common upgrade and gave a considerable improvement in torque, especially when taken out to 5 litres using Holden pistons and SD1 cylinder heads.
I recall the local JRA dealership Taylors of Medindie offered just such a conversion and their demonstrator RR was lovely to drive. This conversion was a well worn path in the '70s, '80s and early '90s, but a 4.6 with a big journal 4 bolt crank would today be a better and easier option for sure - and probably more durable in the long run too.
