HELP - Engine failure in a 2008 Defender

Alright, any help on the following issue would be very much appreciated.

I have recently acquired my first LR, a 2008 defender 110 with around 125,000 on the clock.

Recently (not all the time, but seemingly whenever it feels like it) the engine will lose most of it's power when accelerating and engaging a gear, particularly in the transition from 3rd to 4th. After this happens, if i don't feather the accelerator, the engine will completely cut out, however will start first time.

If the engine doesn't cut out, and i roll to a stop, the idle is very unstable and will fluctuate between normal speed and every 2 or 3 seconds will drop to just about nothing, then pick up again, and so on...

I'm not sure if this could be related or not, but i have seemed to work out that if i change gears with a double clutch i don't seem to have the problem? But it's getting pretty old pretty quickly doubling clutching up hills towing a load!

I assumed it could have been a blockage somewhere so have ran some injector cleaner through the system, but it seems as if it's still happening!!

Has anyone else out there encountered this issue before or point me in the direction of someone who has?

    Thanks,

    Lachlan

I'm not sure if this will help Lachlan but I had a Td5 which in it's 4 th year and about 60K developed a fault with the TPO (Throttle potentiometer). This would allow the vehicle to tick over all day but any application of power resulted in missing and spluttering or the engine cutting right out.
Can't remember if it had any effect while changing gears but definitely similar in other ways to your prob.
    Cheers.
    Alan.

should be a 300tdi and all cables

my first port of call would be looking to see if an intake / turbo hose is delaminating, collapsing or holed.

Don't know about the 300tdi bit, Transit engine I would have thought in 2008. Agree with the rest though.

I just read up on the EGR fault, and it does sound pretty similar to my problem.

Will look into it further and hopefully have some success!

    Thanks,

I'm assuming it is a TDCi, 2.4. The October issue of L R O International had this as part of an article on buying a 2nd hand TDCi. Hope it helps, Bob

The TDCi diesel engine is best described as brutal, there's so much torque. Originally fitted to the Defender in 2.4 litre form, a 2.2 litre version of the same engine powers current models, having been redesigned to comply with emissions rules. He quotes the 4X4 owner of Gumtree 4X4 in West Sussex as saying ' we have not yet had to change an engine, compared to some previous L R engines, there's no real problems at all' ".

"and ' Sometimes EGR valves are problematic, . Symptoms include loss of power, and lots of black exhaust smoke. The engine management light may come on, but not always. ' From Gumtree 4X4 again - ' Injectors are sometimes faulty, it may misfire & be running rough and warning lights may show on the dash display, but that depends how bad the problem is. It would have to be a long way out of parameters to show a warning light, but you would know anyway, as the engine would be running unbalanced. We've had to replace a couple of throttle potentiometers. On older engines, catalytic converters could get blocked - the internals crumble and break up, then get blown back to the silencer and block it up, then you have no power. Shake the catalytic converter, if it rattles budget for replacing the converter & silencer.'
