new info for erratic idle problem! 3.5efi
ok,
after reading everybodys posts of this fault, i started to
read the disco w/shop manual.
i found a very interesting paragraph which hasent raised any
Q's as yet.
as follows.
road speed transducer. sect 2 topic 19 page18.
the transducer provides road speed data to the ecu.
the ecu in turn detects road speed movement from the
road speed input and insures that idle speed controll
mode is disengaged.
should the speed transducer fail in service the ecu idle
speed control would become erratic.
so would this have anything to do with the idle problems when the
car is stopped?

When the car is stopped it gives no pulses so I can't see how it can cause an idle problem when the cars is stopped. The only thing maybe if it went short cct and and put 12v on the ecu constantly it may cause a problem perhaps. If it gave no pulses when rolling the ecu would not disengage the idle cct of course. They are easy to check. I've checked them on idle faults after reading the same passage but never found a fault. I normally find it's caused by base idle and stepper, I always set the base idle a bit high and they seem to run ok.

that makes sence to me.
so ive checked the throttle settings against the book and
they are all within specs.
but when i checked the base idle as the manual
states i couldnt get the base idle below 850rpm. that was
the allen screw all the way down. (only moved it 3/4 of a
turn)
with everything hooked back up she idles in park at alittle over
1000 rpm.
also does the stepper motor have to have a fiber washer
thats a certian thickness, to change where the plunger sits?

You must have an air leak perhaps or the throttle body may need adjusting. The auto cars also have an "in gear switch" to lift idle when you engage drive . As for the washer I've never used an LR one when I have changed them. The thing is when you have the stepper hose blocked none of this matters the only air should be via the idle screw or the throttle plate. You should be able to stall it with the idle screw. Makes me think you have some extra air some where.

8) i await your findings with interest,
on the way home from willowbank yesty, my 3.9 disco decided to have a rest, started to run as if one bank had stopped running, slowed to almost rest, and as we were on a downhill bit, i let it roll out of gear and restarted it, went ok for about ten k's and stuttered again, then went for about 20k's and did the fullstop thing again, just after i passed a tdi disco!
it also began to miss at about 5750rpm on powering away from the toll plaza, the second plaza, it went to 6000 before missing, this is where the tdi seemed to out accelerate me, normally if i go flat throttle it will run to 6250/6500 ish [tach numbers stop at 6000] before it changes up.
so what is it?
and also it has recently begun to rev at 1500/2000 on startup.
8)
Safe Travels

Harry I think you need to be looking at an ign amp or low fuel pressure.

hey shaunp,
how much is involved in relocating the ingition module?
is it as simple as making longer wires? where do peoples put them?

Pretty much , you just mount them next to the coil. Put some heat sink compound between it and the car.

Sounds to me like harry's got a dicky igniter. To me every motor will hiccup occassionally but for it to die or lose a bank is saying "we have a problem".
