Serg the quickest test for the turbo is to remove the hose to the intercooler.
Then by hand spin the wheel... and visual it.
Hopefully you have just holed a hose.

hey all, I just came back from a mates place. Had been driving for about 1/2hr HWY etc. Just near home taking off at the lights I had a popping type of sound then the turbo got very loud. More a mechanical type sound than just pure wistle. Something definitely not right. I pulled over and checked the hoses, but hard under tourch light. I was only 2km from home so nursed it there. EGT and everything else seems normal.
Edit: forgot to add: 1998 110 with 2.8Tgv engine (similar to 300Tdi)
What are the usual suspects?
how to differ between a hose failure and a turbo failure?
cheers
Serg

Just pulled the hoses. Not really much chance of visualing inside the end of the turbo. I did take a pic, not sure it shows much?? I cant see any splits in the 2 silcone hoses from turbo to intercooler. They are oily on the outside though and have been getting worse since the re rebuild. I think my blow by is up on normal, and have a gut feeling it may be due to poor ring seal.
If I can get some solid rubber plugs from bunning etc I could easily pressure test the section of plumbing from tubro to intercooler. I only replaced the top intercooler to intake hose 12-16 months ago, But will have to check it also?
Is there any easy way to check hoses?
I also found this other engine leak that just fills me with that warm fuzzy feeling, see second pic???

Stick your finger in the Turbo and spin the turbine , if it spins OK with no noises, grab the nut on the end of the turbo wheel and see if there is any play, should be able to move it a mickey hair, if it flops about it's time for a rebuild. Check the bottom hose on the intercooler? Regards Frank.
Just to be clear, its not the intercooler hose that goes into the inlet of turbo, that would be the intake hose from Air cleaner. I had that off to get to the bottom hose. My engine has a short 90 bend of silicone hose then some SS pipe then a short straight section to the intercooler inlet. I run a stock intercooler outlet to engine intake rubber type hose.
I was hoping it was one of the 2 lower pieces. I don think so. I managed to find a short straight length the correct ID, but not the bend (those ricers must run some big dia stuff as my little 44mm was not even close to shelf stock) I got a bit of radiator hose just to try.
changed it all over and no improvement.
I made a short vid, now its not super accurate audio, but hopefully it will give the idea:

Anyone???
G'day Serg, I know absolutely nothing about this engine but it does sound like a burst or disconnected hose or a hole in the intercooler etc. Possibly also the wastegate actuator or hose if it has one, or an exhaust gasket before the turbo - just guessing. Do you have a boost gauge - has anything changed with the pressures? No ideas on the fluid leak if it is not oil, diesel or coolant.
BTW can you pm your address details to me so I can send a receipt for the donation you made to the shave for a cure event.
Cheers......Brian

No boost gauge so I cant tell in that department?
when I turned the little tubine in the inlet end, it was smooth and I could not feel any play in the shaft/nut in any direction
I think I may have found the problem:
