Fairey capstan winch - bent base plate
Hi,
I picked up a Fairey capstan winch for my Series III today. The base plate is bent in a few places, looks like it's either been in a crash or been placed under too much pressure. Any idea whether it's acceptable to simply belt the base plate back into shape, or is it better to spend the 60 euro and get a new galvanised one?

many thanks

Well, that's a good find.
As I would not be too bothered about originality, I would be getting some 10mm high tensile aluminium plate and replacing it with that - no doubt purists will have different opinions.
What part of the world are you in phin?

Looks to me like the plate at the front at least is being deformed by
the up forces when the rope is at the top of capstan and contacting the upper roller.
If there is room I'd stiffen (after straightening) it by adding an angle say 50x50x5 each side, bolted/welded along the full length. Leg could point up or down depending on space around.

Many thanks. I suppose it's possible someone didn't use the fairlead and had the rope up too high as well. The original base is 3mm steel, I can get a new laser cut base plate in 4mm steel from Landrover Winches: Mechanical Capstan Winches . Perhaps this is an easier option.
I'm in Melbourne, but the winch (and Land Rovers) are up in Euroa in north-east Victoria.
cheers Phin
