    Unhappy 300tdi pulley belt rumble??

    Hi, Have a weird sort of rumble in the front of the deefer ,sounds like a bearing somewhere ,but have had everything off and all is smooth as, and no play in anything, timing belt done with all new hardware,could it be a worn pulley, belt combination, I changed the serpentine belt and it did seem a bit quieter for about ten minutes, any ideas, very frustrating but after all its a landrover..lol.

    Either a stethoscope or a length of rod/long screwdriver held on each of the components of the belt system may help you track down the culprit.

    If it sounds like a bearing rumble then a good place to start is the tensioner - itself or the bearing in it could be it?

    Have you tried running the engine with serpentine belt removed to make sure not a T belt issue? I had a 97 Defender that seized the alternator bearings with no warning.(over all the other noises)

    Take the fan off and spin the pulley and see if you can feel any roughness or wobble, Regards Frank.

    Greetings. Do you have air con fitted? My Defer developed a bearing growl, tuned out to be the bearings in the idler and air con tensioner pulleys. Have replaced both bearing twice in the last 200K. About $20 from memory at CBC.

    Maybe belt tensioner bearing, its hard to say theres no play but maybe under weight?....something is going on.

    Use the hosepipe trick to locate the source of the noise (one end by your ear and track the source with the other end). The other way is to spray WD40 into things until the sound changes...

    BTW - Don't forget there's a tensioner INSIDE the timing case.
