Need some help on setting up my aux fuel tanks.
Trying to get away from fuel drums in the back and am getting aux tanks made to go under the body. I've ended up with three tanks, standard 16 gal. under the driver (main tank), custom under the passanger as I wanted to keep the tool box (40L) and another custom under the front of the tub (40L). I'd like to keep each tank seperate rather than transfer to the main tank in case something goes wrong. :wink:
I've wired up the original fuel gauge to monitor all tanks with a three position double throw switch and all senders read correct levels. (Fluked another one [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img] )
I'm having trouble getting information on solenoids and manual taps ?
What did the early dual systems use ?

I've got one or two spare manual taps, $10ea + freight. When I had aux tanks on my SIII I had the manual switch, now I've got one rear tank and lpg.
On the Long Range Range Rover I've got 2 sill tanks (70 litres), a rear panel tank (35litres) and LPG (70 litres). I use an electric 3 way solenoid (about $80 new) to pick up from either [L] or [R] sill tank and transfer to the panel tank. I use an early Range Rover electric fuel pump to transfer.
Be sure to place a filter before the fuel pump.
If you want all tanks to feed independently you may have to use 2 x 3 way solenoids or switches if you can't get a 3 way.

Why not run all the tanks individually.
You can switch the sender, pump, and solenoid off one switch (3 pole 3 throw).
Don't know the currents, but maybe use the switch to control relays.
That way you can use a simpler switch.

I have twin sill tanks and 2 gas tanks in place of the original petrol tank.
However, I am after longer range (sometimes).
At the moment I can only get abot 300Km on gas and about 400 on petrol.
Wouldn't mind a little extra, so another 35L would be good.
I already have a twin jerry can holder, but an extra tank wouldn't go astray.

I was planning to continue on with the holden diaphram fuel pump, already have an inline filter, plus there's a stainless steel screen in the glass bowl. So that's covered.
Think I'll go with taps, maybe not under the seat....few other holes already made I could probably fill. 3 into one tap might be a little bit of an ask, though semis use four tanks.... might call a truck spares mob tomorrow out of interest then hang up when they tell me the cost.

I would keep it simple and go manual taps,on is on off is off.Had a gas solenoid pack up a couple of months ago,was a real pain to sort as the nearest LPG parts dealer is 200ks away.

Bit of an update.
For those looking for filler pipe like I was, most automotive shops only stock from 2 inch up which is far too big for what I want. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img]
Always being a slow kettle to boil finally figured to look in a marine shop. They can sell you 3/4in up to 3in fuel hose for filling purposes. Standard pick up pipe is 5/16 as per normal and way cheaper than auto shops. For under $50 I've ended up with enough pipe to do the whole setup and will never perish in my lifetime. One other thing, truck mob weren't much help with taps which spun me considering the number of trucks with more than one tank. Marine shop is the go here too. To begin I'll get the LHS tank plumbed and working needing only one tap. When finished I think it will be main tap to control main tank and aux, then pair the aux line off to service each "sub" tank through a second tap. Might have some fuel lag until the pump catches up on the highway and I'll need to remember to flick the switch over for the appropriate tank sender but should work well.
