Not sure about the cost for the fire wall but another area to look closy at is the foot wells.
Seen a few that have their own fresh air supply.

 Hi,
Got a MQ Patrol but seen a land rover and I've always wanted one (must be the fact I was born in England!)
There is a 1990 110 County with the std V8 engine (done approx 240,000Km) for sale near me for $5400
Recoed gear box, new exhaust and extractors fairly recently
Seems ok except for rust where the windscreen bolts on and also further down the firewall by the doors, all passenger side. the rust quite bad right through. Prob more that I can't see I know the firewalls are infamous for rusting
How much would it be to replace the firewall?, or how long to do it myself, if I did it myself what would the cost be for the firewall?
I know its a lot of questions from a newby but I would rather keep the Patrol than buy a lemonops:
Any info geatly appreciated
Paul

There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours
Sounds like the red one on the highway at Engadine??

Cut a long response short, keep the MQ. But if you're interested.....
......it sounds alot of brass if my imagination serves me well for something asking for a fair amount of work but depends on how much you can repair yourself and replacement parts required. It's possible there has been beach regularly and not washed out afterwards so uni and pinion seals may be flogged out. 240 thou is a fair haul... even though works out to under most vehicles standard average k's per year.
I'd be compression testing the motor and checking for smoke on first start up. Sooner or later the heads will need a clean up as they should be leaking by now. If you're going that far then few more bolts to have the pistons out as well. So there's another grand for a freshen up of the motor if you get a shop to do the machining and build it yourself in the quiet hours of the night.
If the bulkhead is that bad and warrants replacement, I would take a good day and a half to get it back to able to lift the bulkhead out using air tools assisting where possible. Then another 2 days back..... everything comes apart easier than it goes back. Someone here would be able to find one but the cost may prove prohibitive. As an alternative you could buy replacement panels from FWD in Victoria and tack them in or make them yourself.
Another place to look for rust is the rear chassis extensions and all the outriggers, particular on top of the ones that hold the rear tub on.
Do some homework on the cost then if you really want it, nail him with what it needs to pass an inspection.
.....and for your sake don't do what I did disucussing landies in general now. Bought mine for under a grand in tatty work in progress condition which is cheap for around here, only to have everything go wrong three days after getting the registration transfered. Ploughed another 4 and a half in ending up with a brand new 1975 series three landy complete with factory panel damage and mismatched paint job that I'll still be driving in another 40 yrs time as pay back. So beware..... not everythings "you get what you pay for" when dealing in vehicles.

 That's the one!
Is it worth what he's asking?
He's turned offers down in the low $4000 so won't get him much below what he's asking
Paul
Then let it go through to the wicket keeper.

 Hellspawn,
Cheers for your post I was close to talking my self out of it but closer now!
You posted whilst I was righting the post abt the offers in the low 4K's
The rego is due in September if he gets a pink slip on it I'll have a year to get it ready for the next one but I can't see that happening
Is there much to stop me cutting out the bad bits and welding new bits of steel in? I don't know what the legalities of this are, my welding isn 't the best but practice is the way to get better
Gets white smoke on startup but most older petrols do don't they? Got him to give it some whilst I had a good sniff at the zorst and couldn't smell oil so that's a start
Well wait and see what happens, get me old man to look at it mid week when he's about he's got a better idea than me and is an expert of talking silly ideas out of my head!!
Paul
I must work on reverse psychology or something. :?
If dudey gets a pink slip you have three months from the date on the certificate to re-register the vehicle. If dudey registers the vehicle then yes you have 12 months before the next inspection.
Nothing wrong with chopping bits out and welding new bits in, so long as the weld is sound. ie. good strong solid bead along the join... none of this bird dropping stuff...
Like I said either buy the bits from aftermarket places or befriend a boiler maker.... and nope.. I live too far away.
White smoke..... blown head gasket ? Didn't take the cap off the kettle and look for bubbles whilst the motor is ticking over ? Got a feeling that motor is coming out soon.....

Had the cap off couldn't see any bubbles, bit of white **** floating around but not a great deal I've driven worse!
Know a boiler maker so that's a start, well... works for coy making steel frames for fire doors but can still weld a beauty
Will keep ticking thoughts in my head but will prob keep the MQ, problem is it's only a shorty so no good for the longer stuff, oh yeah... and the fact I want a landy
Might be able to afford a "decent" one some time
