    Rear diff rebuild

    Hi All,

Have purchased a new toy and the rear diff centre apparently died on Rocky Tk out at Toolangi.

It came with a replacement 24 spline centre with matching R&P & housing, needs new bearings and setting up properly. Existing Maxi drive locker to be incorporated.

Anyone on here able to do it around here - ish (Geelong)? Recommendations for someone in the area? Approximate cost?

    TIA, DL

Hunter and Cahill do an honest job from what I've heard.

Why couldn't you do it yourself? If you've got a dial indicator and torque wrench is pretty easy.

    Thanks mate,

    I've read this:

Pirate4x4.Com - The largest off roading and 4x4 website in the world.

and all the relevant Ashcroft stuff.

I need new bearings, shim kit and a dial indicator to do it myself, so it's a bit of a cost benefit thing, but definitely leaning that way. Ashcroft recommend all new internal bolts dunno about that.

No big hurry to do this so we'll see if Matt chimes in.

    cheers, DL

Rave doesn't say to use new bolts (except tailshaft). But obviously use the right locktite.

Bolts aren't that expensive anyway - but I wouldn't be replacing main cap bolts; they're absolute overkill anyway.

    Thanks,

I couldn't see why the CW bolts need to be replaced either. In any case it's only about $60 bucks.

Now leaning towards Ashcroft 4.1? R&P's for both diffs, Ashcroft rebuild kits and teach myself how to do it. Don't have a press, but know some who do.

This thing has 35's, which is on the limit for maxi axles, but I don't thrash things. Have happily driven a 350 with stock 10 splines, 31's for a long time now with no probs, just careful off road. Gets flogged on the tar.

Nothing is going to happen for a month or so........ busy me.

    Cheers, DL

    Hi all,

Now kinda leaning towards GBR 4.14 R&P's, but need advice.

They have a right old crack at Ashcroft's offerings (the finish mostly) near the top of this page:

    Coil Sprung - Diff Gearing

    Any comments welcome!

    cheers, DL

I have a collection of pinion height and preload shims you can lend, aint in the country till May though, if using stock 3.54 just get another centre and swap hemishpere's....unless its early max with machined bit for carrier bearing

Enough cans supplied I can set it up, but wont be till mid May

    Thanks Matt,

    Will be in touch.

I guess the question is do I change the R&P's in both diffs to 4.1 ish (this thing has 35's) from stock 3.54 with maxi lockers, axles and stubs?

You've driven my POS with the 350, C9 and 10 splines and know it doesn't get thrashed offroad. Can one get away with 3.54 24 spline and maxi everything on 35's or is it better going to 4.1 ish R&P's (pegged) just for casual use?

If so are GBR R&P's superior to Ashcroft? GBR seem to think so.

    cheers, DL
