Door Locks

Yet again some low lives have forced entry to the car looking for small change and found none as I have none. Rearranged interior and a damaged drivers side lock. Still works but the key is reluctant. They couldn't get in via the passenger door because some one has already left the tip of a screw driver in that one.

So the question is do I have to go to Land Rover for new lock cylinders or can this be sourced elsewhere?

Or do I just leave the truck unlocked?

Or a post sign which says "my loose change is spent on LR maintenance and accessories...try the police car next to me"

BTW I park in a parking station full of exotic motors so why pick on me?

This is not much help...now, but I leave all my storage bins (glove box, centre consol etc...) open when I park in the city or shopping centres, that way everyone can see theres nothing inside. Its worked so far, neither the County or the Disco have been ravaged. A mate with an X5 told me the trick and it works for him too.

I never locked the SIII, cause the locks didnt work, but only a lunatic would try to steal one!

I remember when I used to live in Broome. We all used to deliberately leave coins in the console, vehicle unlocked and keys hanging in the slot just so the windows remained in tact. We all had our cars "stolen" from time to time and oddly they were brought back afterwards. Most outback towns are the same where you'd usually find your car at the pub after being "stolen" earlier in the day and always undamaged. Seemed to me they (theives) couldn't afford a vehicle so "responsibly stealing" yours seemed a logical option. Though stories of outback crime isn't helping you is it ? ops:

There is Solex deadlocks from places like Autobarn, SuperCheap etc for the doors which I'm told swap with original key locks and are harder to "pick" due to keyhole design but to me just invites the windows to be smashed instead.

My thinking would be a simple scrawled note left on the dash, "Someone has beaten you at taking anything of worth from this vehicle", would outdo any protection device apart from a 12 gauge.

I did hear of a pet diamond python being left in the car as a deterrent together with a sign which said "beware of the snake".

Being a Land Rover the seals aren't perfect and the snake would get out

I wanted to get a couple of door locks on a SIII matched to the ignition key awhile ago. It cost me about $30 from a lock smith. I left the door locks with them for a couple of days, but if you can book the job in, maybe you can leave the car with them for a half day, so you're not driving around without door handles

Anyway a regular locksmith should be able to do it cheaper than any genuine option.

I guess the only other anecdote I could add is the one about a Citroen told to me by a locksmith:

"you know how they build one of them citrons...they take a length of string and tie it around the ignition lock and throw it over the nearest rafter...then they build the rest of the car around it..and then the poor bastard who comes to me to have it replaced wonders why I charge them so much to do it.  .

Now that sticker is one for the emporium, " Attention would be theives Thers no change in my ash tray - Its a Land Rover it goes on trying to fix oil leaks"

Just quietly , My professional Opinion to those who have to leave their cars in high "Steal From Motor Vehicle" crime areas is like already mentioned leave yer ash tray out and glove box open.

I make sure there is nothing worth taking in my disco - I guess having no Glovebox helps....
I also have an alarm (K MART $90) and Club Lock ....

Sticker like that on yer truck and theives will probably figure it's easier to steal the oil than anything from inside the vehicle.
