    R380

Im stripping down a R380 for a rebuild. Im at the point of undoing the staked nut on the lay shaft. Im using a 1/2 breaker and I feel like im going to break it before the nut starts to move.

Any tips? its not left hand thread by chance???

Yes I have "un steaked" it

Not sure, thats why I am asking.

The only way to stop the shaft from rotating so the nut can be undone, is to lock up the gear set. The majority of the box still being assembled means that all that rattle/impact is going through those parts.

I dont really want to stuff anything.

double select the box so you have 2 oppsoing gears selectd and then have at it with a rattle gun BUT

hold the socket around in the direction of undo by hand so nothing "chatters"

I have fabricated a anti rotation tool going from the pics in the WSM. But there is still a little play if you rotate the gearset back and forth. Thats where the rattle gun is going to be on/off/on/off. Loading the breaker bar up and it does not move

Holding the socket on the end of a 1/2 rattle gun does sweet FA towards stoping chatter

well I dont think I was playing with it since I snaped the 1/2 drive clean of the breaker left it flush in the socket!

So I figured time to heat things up. #8 tip (my smallest) and a small flame, a few seconds on each corner of the hex and then rattle gun.

I didnt want to rattle gun as the socket is not an impact socket. But all good and its off now.

I have no idea of Dave selects 2 gears at once given where the case is at, at point of lay shaft nut removeal

one of those traps that you fall into if you dont read the whole procedure first and have a coffee while your'e at it and realise if you do a couple of steps out of sequence you're going to have an easy time of things

Im assuming you're talking about the nut that locates the layshaft and extension gears in the rear housing in the center plate...

once you get past the bit of removing the top cover and the selector detents and interlocks you can manually select 2 gears at once. this binds up the box.

to undo the nut (it gets done up to 150ftlb ish) if you have to use the rattle gun you need to keep the preload on the socket in the direction of undo this stops the slop in the gearset from "bouncing" or "chattering" as I called it earlier robbing the impact gun of its inertia. If you've done it as per some manuals that dont have the sequence altered to permit this step simply tie the 2 shafts together and slide 2 of the syncros into mesh. (3rd and first)

not the easiest thing to do on the r380 but not impossible.

If you use this to hold everything while you put your r380 back together be careful, from memory you can accidentally leave it "bound up" and still have it look like it went back together properly.
