    300 tdi glow plug relay

    Hi All
Does anyone know how a glow plug relay for a 300tdi works? I have worked out how to wire it up and I can get it to switch on and off ok but it is the 2 small terminals that I can't work out. Terminal "L" is supposed to switch the earth for the warning light but on the relay I have it does not seem to do anything, terminal "50" is supposed to take power from the wire that switches the starter solinoid, to de activate the relay so the glow plugs are switched off during cranking, if I put power to terminal "50" it doesn't seem to de activate but what is does is make the relay stay on longer so it keeps the glow plugs on longer. Is the relay stuffed or is there something that I have missed.
    Any help would be good.
    Cheers
    Rod

Do you even need the glowplugs up there ?, mine havent worked for a few years after my alarm spider gave up.
Not 100% sure those incidents are related but seems logical, where is the relay located ?

    Maybe this might help.

    DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
    Glow Plugs
Glowplugs are fitted to the TDi engine to assist starting. A constant battery feed
is supplied by fusible link 3 (C907-3) to the glow plug timer (C189-5) on a
brown wire. When the ignition switch is turned to position "II", a second feed is
supplied to the glow plug timer (C189-3). This triggers a feed (C189-6) to the
    glow plugs.
With the ignition switch in position "II", the glow plug warning lamp (C230-4) is
provided a feed via fuse 17 (C580-33) of the passenger compartment fuse box
on a white wire. The warning lamp (C233-10) is connected to the glow plug
    timer (C189-2) by a yellow/black wire.
When the glow plug timer provides a feed for the glow plugs (C189-6), it
simultaneously provides an earth path (C189-4) for the warning lamp. After a
set period, feed to the glow plugs, and the earth path for the warning lamp are
    cut; extinguishing the warning lamp.

On a 300TDi, we don't even need glow plugs here in the UK...

    Personally, I'd just ignore it.

Thanks for that jboot I had that part worked out. What I can't work out is the red and white wire goes from the starter solinoid to terminal "50" on the glow plug relay is supose to interupt the relay so the glow plugs stop opperating while you are cranking but on the new relay when you connect the power supply to terminal 5
"50" it makes the relay stay on for longer.
I hope I have explained the problem a bit clearer.
    Thanks for all the input.
    Cheers

    Hi Dave
I was thinking along the line that the relay might be faulty as it is a brand new relay.

wouldnt be the first time Ive had a dodgy brand new part...

you can replace it with a 100A relay and a simple 555 timer cirucuit (really smart people also include a 20 degree temp cut out on the timer)
