I can't even get the bloody lever to move out of low range when things are cold.

Pretty easy when things warm up, both up and down but the linkages are really cheesy.

Run a shaft thru the seat box and have the lever between the seat and the door You could retain the difflock lever or have a shaft within a tube for twin levers

    Never tried to change down...
So the lower low gears make the TC upchange harder due to lower ratios or is there more to it?

pretty much. The t/case doesn't have syncros to match speed. Stock its a step from 3.32 up to 1.41. Change over to either MD and you have a greater difference.

Some may say its just a matter of matching speed, revs, throttle blips, tongue holding etc. But it is harder than that. The LT230 can be shifted on the fly in stock trim but is less than ideal. If you have load on like a heavy trailer and need low to take off, its a bit of a bugger to change up to high, as you need to pause through N in the T case, you wash of speed. Im sure it can be better with practice but fact is its not ideal stock and harder with the MD change.

In saying that, I tow 1.8t everyday (unless fixing my engine!) and would not go back to stock low range
