Insurance with mods

G'day,

Just making sure i'm not in the minority - Has anyone else had difficulty with their insurance company reference a 2" lift? I called them to make sure it wouldn't effect my insurance and they said i can only lift up to 1" before i incur a special excess.

The same with rims. I have 5.5"s and they will only permit me to widen them by 1", that only gets me to 6.5", when i would like some LR 7"s. (They wont even consider a new intercooler).

I do realise that i am under 25 and these mods reflect exactly what every young hoon does to his WRX (lowered, fat tyres and new intercooler) but i drive a brick on wheels!!!!

Any advice would be great.

cheers.

Hi Ty
You need to find a better insurance co.My sister and her husband are in the insurance industry and told me the only insurance co to deal with for modified vehicles/old vehicles is Shannons.I spoke to a Shannons rep at a car show, told him everything I have done/will be doing to the toy, expecting him to laugh. He was very posative,he said, you have spent all your time and money building it,people like yourself generally look after thier pride and joy and take care when driving it,so the insurance risk isnt what general insurance companys lead you to belive.
Good Luck

I use AAMI here in NSW, not sure if they are in NT, but I have my 2" spring lift noted as an accessory / upgrade with no issues.

I also have ARB front and rear bars noted for no extra charges - just included in the total agreed valuation.

Funny things........insurance companies.

Once a company told me that by having an alarm already installed in the mazda, it is more likely to be stolen in their view and consequently the premium would be unreasonably higher...$850/ann. Couldn't see the point in arguring with them, pretty clear they didn't really want to insure it.

Heard good things about Shannons, don't know about cost comparison, though the fact they are interested in insuring modified vehicles is a starting point.

If you can, use the 4WD Victoria insurance (see website). Bushtrack is also pretty good, as are DGA Brokers. All of the above will handle the mods you state, and 25 is watershed age.
