Thread: 300tdi Intake noise

Be looking at my options and a donor vehicle might be the best option here, as long as it has low kilometers or has been rebuilt fairly recently with receipts etc. To rebuild will cost at least 5k and if I'm patient I'm sure I can find a disco with a good 300tdi engine for less that 2K. I have one question, my disco is a manual with the r380 box and most of the disco's advertised are automatics. Are they interchangeable by swapping the bell housing over? one I'm looking at has a 20L engine code which is a 300tdi with an auto box.

the auto and manual difference is an alloy plate that bolts to the rear of the block, you just swap it over to suit your chosen application, personally i think the auto is a much better option than the manual.

I just happen to have a running spare defender tdi300 here, needs some love but not as much as the one you've got.

Im holding it for v8 Ian.

From memory the last time we were trying so shift it on $2500 with your vehicle at my place gets you the engine installed. (your dead donk becomes part of the install costing/parts supply)

I have just replaced the head on my tdi as it was also cracked on 3 cylinders , $955AUD delivered from UK - head/ gasket set/ bolts.
Spent about $1150 all up including all new coolant hoses, thermostat, coolant and oil/filter.
All work done by me, bottom end was excellent and still has very pronounced cross hatching from original honing so i reckon its good for another 320k.

I wonder what the disco is worth now as it it is with a shagged engine? would I get $2k for it? good condition 1997 SE7 for age (apart from the engine), good manual box, diffs, new brakes, basically all good.

See if you can get another good piston for it or even one new one plus re ring the rest, add new head and ancillaries and should get it done for under 2k.
Unless the turbo is known to be faulty or have issues you dont need to touch it.

I disagree. if the float is out of spec see to the turbo..

you only need to witness one runaway to think its a good idea...
