Donaldson Precleaner
Decided to get one for the forthcoming desert trip. Not having used one before, it seems they are best under 80kmph, so I'll take the normal top for the Safari and swap over when the going gets dusty and slow.
The one ARB supplied doesn't fit the top of the Safari (too wide to go inside, too narrow to go around the top), so I'll be exchanging it.
Interested in any experiences with precleaners on TD5s.
cheers

Hellspawns got a donaldson. Whistles a bit but nothing annoying with it on...at speed you'd never hear it. Beauty is I never take my donaldson off and haven't changed the main filter once since it's been on. I check the filter when I do the engine service but still looks new, not a sign of dirt on it anywhere. 20k km and still has another 20k km left. Have to be happy about that ! Empty the precleaner bowl about once a month, more if I do lots of dirt work.....worst case was after 200km of dust it was only half full. Least my engine had clean air even though I didn't.... could taste the dust for days afterwards....yuk. Gave new meaning to eating a SANDwich for lunch.
If you don't have luck exchanging try a tractor parts or truck spares warehouse as they are normally cheaper than the 4x4 shops.... Or go to Bunnings and find their plumbing section, buy a reducer to fit the precleaner and the top of the safari tube.

Donaldson
I had one for our recent trip to the Cape. It certainly worked well however I was surprised how little dust it captured. Then again we rarely followed in anyone's dust so it was only for oncoming traffic.
As far as fitting a Safari, I checked up very thoroughly and there is not one to fit straight on. You need to get the larger size which is about 6mm greater in diameter then I used a strip of 3mm rubber as a packer. Worked a treat.

Thanks Rosco. I've since gone back and got the larger one, and found it to be slightly wider as you say; and I've just cut a rubber strip to fill it out. Will be fitting tonight.

An 'O' ring would be the shot.
Find it hard that the donaldson is either side of the Safari tube diameter. Should have tried either of the suggested, I'd have to be sure there's one (precleaner) that fits straight on without modification to that size tube.

Got the larger Donaldson, added some 3mm rubber around the inside and now the hose clamp tightens up very nicely.

Sounds like the bigger one is the way to go then, when I get a new one.
See bigger is better

Definitely. I've also now had it on the freeway and can report there is no discernible power loss, so it'll probably stay on the truck all the time now.
unless I'm going somewhere very scratchy and narrow.
Hellspawn had good advice re where to buy, too.
