Got me, never seen anything like that before. There's only two designs I've seen and neither look like that. Land Rover makes this thing as a wheel carrier :?: Interesting.
Apologies if this is a dumbass question. This bracket is believed to be a "wheel carrier" but I can't see how a steel or alloy rim can be tied down with this. The LR part no. is MUC2442. Is it missing a part or am I just being stupid?? :roll:ops:

it is part of a bonnet mount
part number MUC2442 comes up as this
if you bought it from a Stealer...um I mean Dealer... you need to go back..

yes it is a rediculous setup... typical english engineering :roll:
but i suppose it does support a heavy wheel on a very lightweight aluminium bonnet.
Still think a rear mounted wheel is your best option if in cab is not... on the bonnet would be my very last mounting option besides under the rear ala 80 series TLC
Thanks landy_man .. certainly does make sense now. To clarify, I bought a "safety devices" expedition roofrack (see http://www.safetydevices.com/oldsite/4x4/d.../defender6.html) from a bloke who imported the thing from the UK. They are specifically made for Defenders and come with various "options" i.e: sand track mounts, jerry can mounts, high lift and off course a wheel carrier mount (well .. 3 holes where the part in question bolts on to). So I got this part with the rack but never used it .. just tied the 2nd spare to the rack.
Looking at the drawing, I might get away with just getting the retainer .. no 13 or 14 .. 8O (there goes my 12 month plan!!)

Then you have to hold the bonnet (and wheel) up with one hand while extracting the bonnet stay from its bracket with the other.
Then you have to decide whether you really want to stick your head in there under all that weight...

yep and besides all that... the bonnets fatigue, you can't see anything over it.. and it is a pain to load and unload... roofrack being even worse to load/unload...
a rear mounted carrier is the way to go and if you can weld, should not take more than a Saturday to make...
