vibration from dynamic rims - what speed?

I have dynamic rims. I was, prior to purchase, aware that getting them centred on the spigot is important to avoid a wheel imbalance and resulting vibration.

My question to those that have or had dynamic rims and experienced the vibration. Is the vibration limited to a narrow band of speed i.e. between say 100 to 105 km/h or is it evident across the spectrum of speed capable in your vehicle?

I have a vibration in the speed range of about 97 to 105 km/h and before i start pulling out the prop shafts (custom shafts) to check balancing etc and chasing wheel balancing theories I wanted to get feedback on the centring on the spigot theory.

    Hi there

What you need to balance early type rims (PCD 165 x 5) is a finger mount.
Centre mounting steel rims will almost always result in off balance wheels.

The bigger tyre stores that do a lot of 4wdrives will often have these (they aren't cheap)

The early wheels mount using the nuts to hold in position, not spigot as per the later vehicles (P38, D2/3/4, RRS and so forth..)

    Thanks Tombie,

I tried to google a 'finger mount' iro tyres and the results were ambiguous to what maybe your suggested solution. Can you offer more detail or a picture so I know what to look for.

I have been recommended to use balancing beads before i start chasing prop shaft imbalance. They are 35" mud tyres which is part of the problem.

The joys of modification, it invariably creates another problem.

    cheers Mark

    What tyres are you running?

I have dynamic rims on my 130. They are 16 x 8 with zero offset. I run 285/75 Mickey Thompson MTZ and I am forever having balancing/vibration issues. i

All happening around 95 - 100km/h. I do find that it is just a matter of getting the tyres re-balanced. It doesn't take much to knock them out of balance it seems. I did loose a weight once, but lately it just seem after I go four wheel driving, the tyres get out of balance rather quickly.

have you had the tyres re-balanced lately?

    Hi Andrew,

    rims: dynamic 16 x 8 neg 25
    tyres: 315/75R16 BFG KM2's.

I noticed the vibration was more evident on the return leg home from the weekend trip. I have been out 4wd'ing 2 weekends in a row and have done lots of hwy kms going to and from. If it was a problem before i didn't notice because I was driving locally at residential area speed.

The tyres and rims are no more than 2,500 kms old and were balanced when new. I watched the tyre mechanic spend extra special love and attention balancing each tyre after i explained that dynamic rims had a reputation for causing vibrations.

From your comment it might be not unusual to get the vibration in a limited speed range rather than across the spectrum.

I've been told that as the tyre wears unevenly on the treds it can mess with the balance, thus the balancing beads solution because it rebalances the tyre dynamically with the change in wear. My concern with the beads idea is that my air compressor draws moisture out of the air and that goes into the tyre when airing up. Not sure if the beads are affected by accumulated moisture in the tyre. I'll make enquiries with the tyre place.

Perhaps this may be a better idea than putting 'stuff' inside the actual tyre. and also compensates for out of balance tyres, rims, lost weights and picked up mud etc.

I purchased some Counteract balance beads a few months ago that I am going to trial in my 110 with 33" muddies. I love the idea of them, so thought I'd give them a try. They are not expensive by any means. I couldn't find anywhere that sold them, so I contacted the office for this place in Melbourne.

    Sealtite -

The sales manager Kevan was very helpful and arranged for me to buy some direct from their head office in Melbourne. If you are interested in giving them a go and have some questions, I would suggest giving them a call, I'm sure Kevan or someone would be happy to answer a few questions and hopefully tell you where to buy some.

I just put the first tyre on rim last week actually, so here is a photo of what's inside the Counteract bag. That plastic pocket with the beads goes into the tyre whole in the plastic bag. The valve is included if you don't want to take the tyre off the rim and want to insert through the valve stem.

P.S. I see on the contact page of their website, there is a bunch of sales staff based in NSW. Maybe try one of them.

    Hi MLD

I still think it is all due to tyre wear and not the rims. Once I get mine rebalanced, the vibration is gone...until I go off road again. With the bigger tyres I think all it takes is a chipped shoulder to put the tyre out of balance.

Something I've wondered about is whether aired down tyres combined with wet/mud etc is allowing the tyres to rotate slightly on the rims. Would certainly cause balance issues if it was.
I keep meaning to mark the valve position on the tyres using paint pen or similar so I can check but always forget until the next time I have a balance issue and by then its too late.
Usually the comment from the tyre guys is that one or two wheels needed a bit to rebalance, and the others were OK.
I'm running disco rims, not dynamic.

Thanks Justin , the balancing beads that were recommended are the same as your Counteract beads. I read the info on Dyna Beads website (same product but uses ceramic beads not glass) and they have 2 installation options, first is to have the beads loose in the tyre and the other is to put the bag in whole. Not sure the benefits of either. The dyna website seems to suggest the whole bag approach for a newly fitted tyre and the loose beads as a retro instal.

Using the Dyna Beads recommendation a 35" tyre requires 8oz of beads per tyre.

I'd be curious to see how you go with them. I have a trip to the Vic High Country coming up next month and fret at the thought of another 7hrs of vibration like last weekend.

It's worth a try. The truck has to go in for a new exhaust and the tyre place is next door. 2 birds, 1 empty wallet.
