Thread: Motorway Remould Tyres - new 235/85x16's

If only they would go the whole hog and do the Super gripper instead,they are a much more agressive pattern.I have 1/4 tread 825/16 Supergrippers (purchased secondhand for $25ea)on my Ser3,the traction in mud and sand is really good,just how much better would a full tread tyre work??

The beauty of owning 4wd's in British and Japanese is you get to look at different forum pages, because after all, we all know they have problems fellow owners can help you with.

Its different to AULRO you don't have to log in to view the forums.
Under the section 'Where the rubber hits the Road' have a look at the forum entry on Motorway remould tyres, they don't get a good rap at all.
In fact they sound quite dangerous, there is no point in compromising safety for price. Or as one oner on that forum put it, '... I would rather leave the car in the garage till I could afford a decent reputable tyre' or something like that.
Just food for thought.

I cant speek for motorway, but i run re caps on my disco
31 10 r15, at 80 bucks fitted icant fault them. i ve done nearly
20 000 k's on them and they are about half way.
they are softer than new tyres, and the way i drive my disco
they stick like s#@t to a blanket!

i also dont see the need to spend $350 plus on a tyre that
could get staked/ slashed ect.
the only trouble i ve heard of is with a mate of mine, who
tows a car trailer all week, the extra weight seems to seperate
the cap. but with a lifetime warranty he just
takes them back and gets newies for free!

Think the side wall is part of the problem as to why recaps fail.... fatigue mostly. High sidewalls need to withstand the rolling side to side as the vehicle negotiates corners. This constant flexing I think causes the walls to over time fatigue, so although the tread maybe new the wall has still seen thousands of k's, which eventually leads to a rupture.

The other is the heat generated from speed or loading causes problems. Normally causes a bulge under the cap which gradually gets worse as more of the tread seperates from the tyre usually generating more heat. Had that happen before after hooking along the highway for an hour, changed to the seen better days spare tyre and continued on. The clean skin spare never looked like failing.

I'm running 2nd hand clean skins on Hellspawn which have so far lasted 2yrs of abuse 15k km. Probably have another 2yrs left on them. I just went for them due to cost and I don't like retreads.

Having said that, my trailer has 20yr retreads that haven't failed once and will probably perish before they fail. Guess you're just lucky sometimes and others you aren't.

"Re moulds are great but there are a few associated things you need to know as a user.

by nature ther are very heavy - due to the manner in which they are constructed. this translates that if you get one thats less than round - it will be very hard to balance.

they are speed and load limited - so be aware that you may not be covered by insurance - check with your company first.

if it were for me Id consider them for second set use - but definately not for high speed prolonged highway use.

In another life I managed a tyre shop. Put simply my experiance tells me not to use retreads at all , as they say a secondnad set of tyres with 70 to 80 % tread will last better than retreads or remoulds. The Hot or Cold process used stress the tyres and to be honest they are simply not safe enough for me ( IMHO of course)

Though BEWARE OF SECOND HAND TYRES sold by shady types who only sell second hand tyres , they are generally imported in containers from parts of the world unknown !!!!

The moral of the story, buy new if you can , second hand of mates etc where you can, second hand dongy imports if you have to , remoulds for second set - muddies, or slow backroad use, not for trips, and retreads for your mother in law!

yep not the first time I have put this post up, have to say have looked around at a few other sites recently, I like the way some of them have different forums for different things like Tyres, Diesel, V8 add ons etc.
