    Aircon de-gassing

I've never had to open an aircon system on a vehicle before...

What is involved in degassing an aircon system, and what is a reasonable price to pay for the job?
Its an aftermarket system in my daughter's County, and I've no idea what refrigerant would be in it.

First, the average Yeo can not legally degas an air conditioner, it is deemed harmful to the Ozone.
You also need a license to work on them, recover the gas into a suitable receptacle for disposal or on use.
Why do you want to degas it?
If it is not working a regas and new filter/receiver drier could cost around $150.00

Oh Pateyw, why didn't I think of that?

You will still need to go to your local A/con place to have the system re charged, I'm sure they would be prepared to degas, allow you to do your stuff then they replace the receiver drier and regas.

youd be amazed at how often I get this at work..

"can you just regass it, it vibrated loose and as part of doing XYZ I worked out the system needs a regas because when I pulled component F out of the AC system to get to this thingy here no gas came out"

and as Im staring at it I can see the spray marks of the system oil all over the area they're talking about.

OR my favorite when they out rank me or think they can intimidate/have something over me.

"you're going to regas my system for me, you dont need to pressure check it or anything else it had plenty in it when I let it out so I could get this bit off"

its amazing how few automotive AC systems can stand up to a 6000PSI nitrogen purge

"yeah sorry mate looks like your (this bit with bloody great hole in it now) is actually buggered, It failed when I did the nitrogen blow through prior to vac down. I dont have time to sort that out but heres the number of a good Auto AC place, just tell em I sent you and they'll give you a deal.

Car wreckers are required by Brisbane City Council to have degassing and storage gear to degas the systems in any wrecks they bring into their premises. Funny how many wrecks arrive inside the fence and are found to have developed a leak and all the gas leaked out before it got onto the wreckers premises. "No gas in it when we got it, Sir".
