    more county questions

Well- I have got my County- picked it up today. My questions now are about mods to the vehicle.
    1. What are my options for a snorkel or does it have to be a custom- most of the off-road shops can't get anything unless its for a Toyota or Nissan.
    2. Where do I mount a deep cycle batteries for auxilaries?
    3. If I order a Kaymar wheel carrier and a roof rack for the Defender model will it fit the earlier style county?
    4. What are the best oils to use in the county- transfer, gearbox, engine, diffs?
Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers,
    Pullsy

    County

    First congratulations.

    1. Snorkel - take the car to a exhaust shop and get them to bend some big exhaust pipe to follow the windscreen frame, along the top of the guard and down into the engine bay after removing the black plastic triangle piece. Weld on a piece of angle at to attach the snorkel to the windscreen frame. At the other end cut a piece of steel the same shape as the plastic triangle with a hole the same size of the pipe and weld that in place. You have a snorkel for much less than the $400+ being charged in shops.
    2. Where do I mount a deep cycle batteries for auxilaries? Let me know when you find out. I was thinking under the center console behind the box.
    3. If I order a Kaymar wheel carrier and a roof rack for the Defender model will it fit the earlier style county? Don't know. The TD5 rear cross member is different to previous defenders and countys. The county roof has ribs on top of the roof, making the roof a bit higher than the defender roof.
    4. What are the best oils to use in the county- transfer, gearbox, engine, diffs? In a 4 speed box you can use good engine oil I'm told.

    Congrats Pullsy.
    Did you go the Isuzu?

In regards to the snorkel I'm a bit unsure if it's the same but on the Stage1 mating up to the aircleaner was a bit of a job. The inlet had to be moved to the other side on the can.

In regard to battery location a previous owner installed a larger underseat tool/battery box on the drivers side. Simply made a bigger box and new lid, enlarged the opening and bolted it in place.
I'm planning on doing it to both boxes on my Defender.

    Cheers

Good one Pullsy - Counties ROCK!

I've been using all sorts of oils in mine over the years and honestly, as long as you use the recommended rating, brands of oil dont really change much (my opinion). Having said that, I'm a Castrol fan, as its available anywhere and competitively priced - I prefer not to mix oil brands as the ratings can be significantly different from brand to brand.

The 4BD1 needs regular oil and filter changes, I do mine every 5K - oil, oil filter and fuel filters - its the best insurance money can buy.

BTW, getting oil into the gearbox can be a pain in the butt - I have a hose with a funnel in the end, which I run through from the battery box (there's a grommet you can pull out to run it through). This makes filling the box "no mess, no fuss" - albeit a little slow! Heaps cheaper than buying a pump as well.

Have a look in my readers rides section.

Snorkel made from 3inch mandrel bent exhaust pipe $25

You can fit two batteries under the passenger seat

And as for the wheel carrier I had mine custom built by a mate in hsi lunch hour for a bottle of southern
