But having the right pressure will mean the tyre will wear evenly across the tyre rather than the tyre being bald on the shoulders while there is still 7mm of tread toward the center.
I actually believe my tyre pressures are too high on my fronts which casues the centre to wear more during straight running. The advatage of this is while I'm running straight the shoulders or the tread close to the edges is not wearing. Then during cornering the tread toward the edges are worn more. The result is the tread across the tire wears evenly.

And this is why I don't think the 4 psi rule works for me. My driving varies too much. During the wet season up here, I drive a short 5 minutes to work and back but during the dry my Disco sits in front of my house and might not get driven for 2 weeks or more. During the dry it's usually long out of town runs and odd runs to pick up or drop of larger items that I can't get on the postie and the missus has the Skoda.
For the short trips to work my tyres are probably under pressure becasue they dont't get hot enough for the air to expand and increase the pressure from heat. Then for runs around town they are probable still under inflated and I wear more of the shoulders of the tyres driving around round abouts and street corners but when I'm out of town they are probably over inflated and I'm wearing more of the centre of the tyre. Since I had worn more of the shoulders around town the over inflation out of town just evens up the wear.
The whole reason this has come up is I am taking the Disco on it's first really big trip with it loaded up as much as it has ever been with me. I beleive the extra weight will cause more wear than most things. I probably shouldnt worry too much as a good part will be at reduced speed and pressure but I was just trying to work out what to go to for the high way sections.
