R380/Tdi and the First gear is not low enough for towing.

Likewise td5 R380 1st gear not low enough for towing in tricky situations.

It seems that Aschcroft's underdrive is the way to go.

Have you fellas forgotten your Landies have low range?

I was talking about 1st low range (heavy towing off road).

Of course there is no issue on flat bitumen.

That's my only problem with that combo too. Made worse with the 255/85s on it. A lot cheaper to just take off in low second on those odd occasions when it's a problem then slip it up to high. Still an annoying design flaw on an otherwise satisfying machine to drive.
On the Ranger you have to lift a sleeve thing below the gear knob to open the gate for reverse. Even with such a low first you have to nearly use full throttle to get into a break in traffic otherwise there's the long, embarrassing wait with an irate motorist in the rear vision mirror till the tacho creeps up to about 2000, then it all comes on strong up to about 4000. The thing still has only 1500 km on it so it maybe a little tight yet.

Low first has been too tall on occasion for me too. I've considered lower diffs and Disco transfer gears but a lot of money and spanner work to do.

When you get over 100k km towing come back and talk to me about engine gearbox combos

Nope havent forgoten and yes like many things it CAN be done but is not ideal. THen if you have addressed low range not being low enough, i.e. crawler gears, then its harder again to change.

With the power and power band of the Tdi it could have well used a 6 speed. I Personally would not have 1st quiet as low as the MT82 just so I could get the ratios closer.

Small capacity diesels may have the goods on paper but even these modern ones have a small power band and to keep in it for working conditions you need gears.

yep, towed all of 100k and more, much of it in low range, over more than 40 years.

Auto is really the best solution but need one with ability to lock TC in all gears not just 4th. AFAIK the zf on the td5 doesn't allow that.

The Ashcroft underdrive is a better solution than final drive ratio amendments as it gives you 4 ranges to choose from - probably as close to an auto as one can get.

Multiple ranges are no substitute for decent power and torque mated to a good spread of usable ratios. Its not about less revs at higher speeds for me. I use my LR to work and you soon learn the short comings of any vehicle in that environment.

Yes - all about the appropriate spread of ratios which the current td5/R380/LT230 does not provide when heavy towing in arduous off road conditions - that's why I have just about settled on a 4 range set up.

Likewise, I am in my LR working all day.
