I have Ascrofts ATB's fitted front and rear to my 02my Defender and they have transformed the vehicle.
In sand the vehicle now tends to want to stall before it will bog down and I have not seen the traction control light come on since they went in.
And no noticeable difference to driving on the tarmac.
For offroading, the best money I have spent;)

ATB are torque biasing diffs, in other words they shift the torque across the axle away from the side with less grip. They are ideal for Traction Control vehicles as the TC see the slipping wheel and applies the brake to it to shift the drive in a std diff to the other wheel which only aids the ATB in doing it's job better.
Mine was <$500- shipped from the UK, and while I pulled the axles and centre it was $250- to have the centre swapped, all new bearings and seals, pinion height set, C&P lapped and 4 bolt flange fitted (and it took them 4 hours to pull the 3 bolt flange off).

Rear at this stage...the Aussie dollar dropped, also a lot easier to fit in the rear. If they hadn't sent the wrong bearings could be done in about 3 hrs ...Gary

Here is a demo of a TruTrac working. As said before, they are a torque biasing diff not an LSD. They are best suited to the front axle as they work like an open diff, but will also work happily in the rear diff, and as said before make a noticeable difference in sand. Std shafts will cope until you get into the realms of left foot braking to really make the Trutrac work. The only noticeable driving trait a Trutrac has is that it will make the steering centralise more positively, which you soon become used to, and IMO is no bad thing. Bigger tyres and a heavy right foot require Ashcroft or HyTuff shafts. A Trutrac in the front diff and A Detroit/Eaton No Spin in the rear makes a great combo! Lucky 8 off road (out of the US) is the cheapest. He deals thru Email only. He's on this forum, and delivers quickly. Hope this vid helps.. :)

Here's the Detroit/Eaton locker... better known as a No Spin Diff.. These are suited to the rear ONLY. They are awesome, seem to handle big power and are a 'fit and forget' locker. They have some odd traits, all of which you get used to.. When turning a sharp corner (roundabout etc) if you accelerate then decelerate, the drive is transferred from the inner wheel to the outer wheel... As the wheels are traveling at different speeds you will feel a deceleration/acceleration feeling.. Once you learn to drive to suit the Detroit, you will either drive thru every corner or overrun thru every corner. They also make the occasional bang as they lock in after corners or turns.. With the few I've owned (inc the current one in the rear of the Cummins powered 101), the bangs only seem to occur in the first few hundred kms. These lockers require decent shaft upgrades... STD shafts will last for a little while, but have a habit of taking the guts of the locker out when they break... If you fit a Detroit/Eaton, fit it in the back, and fit upgraded shafts at the same time!;) They work well in conjunction with a Trutrac in the front diff. Lucky 8 also stocks these. :) I ran this setup in my 130 along with Ashcroft CV's and HyTuff shafts.. It was awesome! Once I work out how to mod a Trutrac to suit the 101's massive shafts, I'll be doing the same in that! :)
After watching that TruTrac Vid I could not see where running a rear TruTrac in the front without changing the gears round would cause problems After all you really want it at its best in reverse any way. But ready to be educated:p as not the sharpest tool in the box:dbcry:

The only reason I ask is that a mate has the Detroit Locker in the rear of his 80's and it doesn't make any noise or difference to its handling..... unless u remove the Front Driveshaft....
Drivetrain America are cheaper, but are not Rover specialists and may not have the backup and tech help that Lucky8 offer.Quote:
