Motor oil for transfer and diff flush

    Hey guys,

I've just drained the oil from my rear diff and transfer box and I'm a little worried it was so dark.

I have 3.78L (1 Gallon) of Redline light weight shock proof to replace it with but as the Redline stuff is $120 for the Gallon, I'd like to flush it with something cheap.

I'd never use any sort of oil flush additive as I'd be worried there could be some left that would thin and destroy the new oil. Maybe I'd consider it on a motor that had gone 3 times it's service interval or something extreme.

So I'm thinking of filling my Diff and Transfer with some cheap Gulf Western engine oil (20w-50 or something) that's $16 for 4L from Super Cheap Auto, going for a run (read drive) 100km out of town and back then drain it out again before filling with the good stuff (Redline Shock Proof).

    Opinions please.

    Happy Days

What sort of car, Joel? Light weight oil doesn't sound right for the diff oil. Normally it would 90EP

..... Ahh, just did a search and found it's a gear oil.

It would be OK in the TC for a short run , wouldn't need 100k thou, just enough to warm it up would do. wouldn't recommend it in the diff (hypoid gears means a lot of pressure ) independent brand diff oil is cheap

is the cheapest Gear oil at Super Cheap Auto. At $33 it's a fair bit more than the $16 engine oil.

    Flushing oil.

Hi Joel, for flushing oil, I would go to K mart and buy any oil and over fill the diff and gearbox a little bit, and run the car on the axle stands for 10 minutes, until the axle and gearbox warm up a little. That way there is is no load on the gears and bearings. In industry we use usually hydraulic oil for flushing because it's thin and "washes" the surfaces. We also use heaters to make the hydraulic oil even thinner. When you buy "flushing oil" at the auto shop it's usually just hydraulic oil. Interesting for me was that the oil we buy from the oil companies does not meet some equipment manufacturers cleanliness standards and we have to heat it & circulate it through filters before putting in the machines and use. cheers simmo 1995 110 wagon

Should I expect that much damage in 100km or so though?

I know 30w engine oil is considered/recommended for one of the LR manual gear boxes (LT95 maybe).

I'm only going to use it to warm up the transfer and diff then drop it straight out.

Mate if you were a bit closer I'd give you a couple of litres of DIFF OIL or likewise read what Simmo said.
    Ultimately its your Diff.

Should I be right with just the rear wheels off the ground and the centre diff spinning? I'll choke the front wheels.

How will I over fill? Don't I just fill until it runs out the filler hole?

    Happy Days.
