Purchased from Graeme Cooper Automotive: www.lrexpert.com.au

    Also available from Karcraft: www.karcraft.com.au

GCA was slightly cheaper and for me closer

    GCA takes Amex. Karcraft doesn't.

NRMA (RACV and RACQ equivalent) has a mobile alternator replacement service but didn't stock Land Rover of any description.

So much for "it pays to belong"

    I agree.

It is useful when contributors to this forum feed back as much information as they can: the problem, the alternatives explored and the solution (hopefully) found. It works very well on LRenthusiast.com

The search facility will do the rest as we build the knowledge base.

I just purchased a V8 Disco Magnetti Marelli alternator (100A) from Triumph Rover spares in Adelaide. Just been reconditioned, with a 12 month Guarantee, for $220. Unlike everything else under my Defender's bonnet, it's all nice and shiney too. 8)

Whilst I can't say this in Latin

I noticed your post for the 200Tdi Alternator/V8 Magnetti Marelli adaptation.

I wonder if the 300Tdi Diesel version is different?

    Some more info to report:

First a recap: the new alternator labelled for "late 300Tdi" has a different connection for the tacho feed than the "old" one so I improvised using the old tacho feed which is a cable with what appears to be a resistor attached.

I notice that although the car is idling at 750rpm the Tacho is reading 1000 rpm. I managed to spin the old girl out to 5000 rpm on the clock now. 8O

4000 on the clock was the previous reading.

The conjecture on my part is that the original tacho feed is not compatible with the later model alternator. Therefore I should source a new feed for the tacho.

I will be replacing the whole Disco at this rate 8O

    More forensics tomorrow.

    Well I'm a goose 8O

The pulley diameter on the new one was smaller than the old hence the difference in the RPM reading.

Swapped over today and all is back to normal: red line at a bit over 4000 and idling at 800.

BTW the "Resistor" on the end of the tacho wire is a suppressor to prevent interference with radio reception.
