It goes thump in the night, and also the day as well !!!

I'm hearing noises coming from under the car... see this is what happens when you have the volume turned down on your stereo, this is why I think all those commodores have the music turned up loud

This noise happens when I take off from a standing start, not going to fast (usually happens after about 10 minutes, from cold) and normal happens within the first few seconds of acceleration. The noise is a dull thump, I think near the back, hard to tell.... that's about as much as I have found out. I had a look under the car on the weekend and apart from the normal land rover leaks all the fluid levels seem to be ok !!!

The other thing it only happens as I said when I take off, no other time, not even when I'm decelerating !! Also if I take off from the lights like a grandpa (No offence to any Granddad's out there) it doesn't thump !!!

Any ideas, direction and what to look for ???

    Thanks
    Matt

Use a large screwdriver and lever them, if there is movement they need replacing

Sounds like you're running down pedestrians or wildlife.

More likely to be though the suggested or maybe the rear uni joint.

I had a quick look at the uni joints and apart from a bit to much grease around it (I greased them a couple weeks back, didn't clean up my mess)... I put a big screw driver in it and tried to move it, but it didn't, seems to be ok !! Is this the right way to check it !!

not that I would know ops: but I would have thought that if there was a bit of play in a drivetrain or suspension component, the thump would happen almost immediately upon acceleration. Is it possibly something to do with auto tranny?

Yep right way by me to check looseness, had it out of gear and handbrake off with the wheels not quite chocked I hope ?

A practical test if nothing turns up with the screwdriver test....speed humps. Canter down to and through the local Maccas to test if it goes clunk when the vehicle hops a speed hump.

8O Gearbox noise..... hey let's not get that worried just yet.

    Thumps and bumps

I'd be going along with rar110 suggestions as all of us who have and do own coil sprung Landies and Rangies you soon get to recognise the various clunks that come from the underside of said vehicles, my 110 Isuzu which is 20 years old in Nov this year is due for a range of suspension things to be replaced during that month whilst I'm on holidays as well as painting my current restoration project (Series 2 Comm.Recon car) as well as doing things for SWMBO hope she doesn't read this post see ya's

Thanks for the suggestions, Will have to have a better look on the weekend now... But it is not the normal driveline backlash noise.

Also when driving tonight it doesn't happen unless you put your foot down from standing start, if you drive it normaly it's fine. And if I hold the Auto in 1st gear, it still does it...

The other thing is if for example it takes 5 secs before the first gear change the thumping (dull thud) noise will happen at about the 2.5 sec mark !!

    Matt.
