Diff was used. There were no oil leaks around axles.

    That isn't quite true.

It is fine to drive on the rear diff only if you are very gentle with it. I certainly wouldn't set off on a 700 km trip towing while running only on the rear diff.

Have you fixed the problem in the front?

You will probably find if you fix it properly you won't have issues anymore.

    1. stop driving like an American... :P

you will probably find that the front diff had a snapped axle or early failure and you havent noticed it because its bound up enough to work. when the rear diff let go or lost traction during a hard climb the front diff, already damaged gave up at the same time.

replacing only the rear diff then continuing to drive like normal will have only hastened its demise and you might also find that if it was a second hand diff that was just "laying around" it was laying around for a reason. Most likely that reason was excessive play in the cross pin. As you've just found out putting in a diff with play on the cross pin is just an invitation for more problems later, fine for a limp me home please repair not such a good idea for prolonged driving and continuing a trip.

I would think that the diffs would quite easily handle running on just one diff. I mean when the cdl is locked and you loose traction you are transferring all your torque to the other diff.

they'll handle it for a little while, but not continuously unless you drive gently.

The SALS on the other hand you could drive around all day WOT in 1 LOW with the front axle locked up solid and a trailer on the back and it wouldnt have cared.
